Should You Drive a Luxury Vehicle?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Should you drive a luxury vehicle?

There are many pros and cons to both sides of this situation.

Pros: It'd be nice to own a luxury vehicle to impress your real estate clients. Owning an expensive car hints that you are successful, and comfortable enough in spending money on something nice. Aside from impressing real estate clients, it can also be a nice present to yourself for a job well done.

Cons: It's expensive to maintain and purchase a luxury car. Many of them require special proprietary parts or specialists to keep them running. If you are going the "fake it til you make it" approach, it could be easy to fall into debt.

So what do you think? Should real estate agents drive a luxury vehicle?

I think, that one should drive whatever makes them happy.  It has nothing to do with perception unless one is focused on impressing others.  We have a client who drove a Honda Accord (one of the first produced) because she loved the car. She and her partner are the top producing agents in their luxury arena...A

I agree! I saw some agents speaking about this online who said the opposite. While they make good points, ultimate I think it's what makes you happy. (Personally, I'd be more happy pouring more money into my business using the money saved from an buying an economy car)

If that concept were viable at what point will my customers be impressed? Buy and drive what you like and can afford it's that simple.

Interesting to see this is the perspective people are leaning towards! We definitely agree with this.

I have never been a fan of living outside of one's means.  I'm a fan of driving what makes sense for your area and your business.  If you work land, a pickup makes more sense than a Ferrari.

I always recommend parking a couple doors down to make it harder for the client to see the car.  There are definitely some out there who see your car and judge you based upon it.  I've seen people love an agent, but turn them down because they had a nice car and in the seller's view "they were successful and didn't need the work" and gave the listing to an agent with a lower-end car, and I've seen the exact opposite.  I've also seen people reject an agent because they drove a Prius.

Thank Ryan. I feel the same way about living within your means.  (or even under!) That is a good strategy to park a few homes down.
