Motivational Monday - OWN It!

Thoughts On Leadership...and Life

One must never delegate taking responsibility or blame for things going wrong to others. Too often, the temptation exists to always be right, to always have the answer, to never make mistakes, to always know what to do (and say)…

It is not a weakness to be wrong and while it does take courage to own wrong or failure without shifting the blame, doesn’t the buck stop here - always?

Own it!

Not only leaders but, people in general miss out on opportunities to build their influence because they absolutely refuse to own responsibility when things go wrong. How can you expect those you lead OR even those you work with to take responsibility for their part when things go wrong if you don’t (or won’t) do it yourself?

Whether you lead a team or are independent, the example that you set when it comes to ownership of responsibility is something that the ‘world’ notices. We need leaders in our profession - and in life - to take responsibility and embrace humility.

Practice saying these words:  I’m sorry, I was wrong.

Become proficient at & comfortable speaking those words. Those words alone garner more respect than you can imagine…unless you’re one who speaks them. Then you KNOW the impact they have on those who hear them and how well they defuse a situation as well. Think about it...

"First rule of leadership; everything is your fault"

                                                       -Francis Chan

Happy Monday All!

My attitude in customer service is ' It is always my fault - unless it is my fault' -

never waste time trying to find someone else to blame - just go in and fix the issue

Hi Debe,
I learned early on that you gain a lot more respect by admitting fault and being willing to fix it than placing blame.  Even if it's not our fault, we can still take responsibility for a solution, can't we?

That is one of those things that I worked for YEARS on when I was raising my two boys, Michael Jacobs. They were 18 months apart so, because they spent so much time together, they were notorious for blaming the other one!

It is a game-changer when you realize that saying you're wrong is actually quite liberating!

SO funny, Grant Schneider but, that story is likely the spark to this post! I love that story!

As I mentioned to Michael, Ron and Alexandra Seigel, it truly is liberating, isn't it? I also thoroughly enjoy watching others' responses to an admission of a goof!

I so appreciate you always sharing, Roy Kelley! PS I saw that you were 'welcomed' in the Rain earlier today! Looks like some members are having someone else make their comments!!!

Oh, I know that dance well, Sheri Sperry - MCNE® and what is funny is that they eventually get angry at you or ultimately admit...which has to feel like a million pounds off of their shoulders after all of the drama leading up to the admission!!

There's another reason to just say, "I'm sorry, I was wrong!" - It's a time-saver! LOL

I totally agree, Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 - it's not just those in a leadership position that should be 'owning' it!

And, thank you for the feature!

You put a smile on my face today when I read your comment, Hannah Williams - you reminded me of my grandmother (who was a school teacher) and I haven't heard that since she was alive. Thanks for the smile, my friend!

Debe Maxwell, CRS  Well no one ever compared me to their grandmother or a school teacher but I will take it as a compliment as I now she was very important to you.  Putting a smile on your face makes me HAPPY as you are my very special Friend

OMG, I love it, Lise! "It is always my fault - unless it is my fault" - PERFECT! And, I'm with you - moving on allows us to focus on the fix, what we're going to do to improve upon what happened and what we're going to do to keep it from happening again. I like to leave these things in the dust, never to be seen again, Lise Howe
