My computer was down for 9 days and I survived. It was ugly.

My laptop computer was down for 9 days, and I survived. It was ugly. Actually, it was lovely. I did have business to conduct throughout that time, but through the magic of cellphones and tablet computers, I was able to continue on as if nothing happened. It was more difficult on those tools, but they worked nontheless.

Isn't it amazing how dependent we've become on technology? I've heard it said many times that if you live by technology, you die by technology, but today we have so many backups that we can seamlessly conduct business no matter what vehicle we can use.

I started in real estate just as the 8 inch thick MLS book was being phased out. I can't imagine doing a property search with one of those door-stops. Doing business on my tablet and cellphone did take a little getting familiar with, but once I had the hang of it, it was a breeze. If you haven't had the opportunity to use those vehicles to conduct business, I would encourage you to practice with them before you end up where I was a week ago. It wasn't a choice in my case, but it did make my life a lot easier when I learned how to use them effectively. My cellphone saved the day.

Dependent...Oh yes...it feels like you are cut off from the world though we all now have substitutes that get us thru till the fixes can be arranged.

Good morning Mike. I think you are onto something. We learn to depend on tools and when we lose them we can be lost, but need not be.

I remember when I first got my smart phone.  I would be somewhere and think, I need to check my email.  But, always in my head the first image coming to mind was my laptop for access.  It took awhile to retrain my thinking!

Wow, that is quite an accomplishment.  I have had to be without my laptop for a few days and got by with my phone and tablet, but I was very grateful to have my laptop up and running again!

Hello Mike - I started in real estate when those thick volumes were still in existence and remember hearing the despair expressed by those when the books made their exit.  Some people moan when their access is limited today. Others rejoice.  It all becomes perspective.

hi Mike- I will be the first to admit that I will turn the car around if I realize that I've left my cell phone at home.

I use several HP business notebook PCs in my office network. For hardware backup, I buy refurbished PCs for $200 to $300 on eBay from reputable vendors. If one PC breaks, I just switch to another PC and keep working.

All data is synced using SpiderOak encrypted cloud backup, so all PCs always have the latest versions of files.

Well, I don't own a cell phone because where I live and work there is no cell signal. But when my laptop went down a few months ago I was very glad for my land line and for the old desk top that usually gathers dust in the corner.

I know I "should" learn to use my tablet for more than downloading books from the library.

Meanwhile, thanks for saying that word: backup. You reminded me that I need to plug in the external hard drive and back up some recent work.

It is harder to do some work on our cellphones (doing a search on our MLS is a pain) but it certainly is possible! And it is amazing and a bit scary how dependent we are on technology.

Nothing beats a nice big monitor especially when writing up documents.  My current one is 23 inches and I wish it were bigger.  I have so many devices and I using all of them every day!!!  My laptop is currently in need of tuning up.

Technology is a blessing and a curse, but in the real estate world it would be really tough to work without computers of some kind.  Thankfully the mobile devices can get the job done!
