The house has the benefits of a condo and the comfort of a suburban single-family home. Restaurants, groceries, happy hour, a movie theater, a newly updated shopping mall, the Custis trail, parks, and the metro are all a five-minute walk away. DC is one traffic light away by car. But you’d never know it sitting in the shade of the big oak trees in the backyard.
We both worked in DC at the time and commutes were our top huge concern. But after years living in a large apartment building, we wanted private outdoor space. This house was the perfect balance—as convenient to DC as any apartment building on the orange line corridor, but much more peaceful than an apartment building with a beautiful yard to call our own. The basement was the cherry on top—it allowed us to relax insider without disturbing anyone who might be sleeping or working upstairs.
There’s a lot of history on the block. The style of house was built in the late 1930s, and many still remain on Taylor St and the surrounding blocks. Some of the neighbors have lived on the street for decades and know a lot of the history of the neighborhood. The house was featured in The Washington Post in 1939; I've attached a PDF of the page on which it ran.
We also loved not having to plan things in advance. It was so easy to grab dinner or catch a movie without thinking about how to get there or worry about traffic. Ballston is more family-oriented and quiet than Clarendon, but still within walking distance of all of the nightlife.
Arlington is well run. The schools are top tier, the county services are second-to-none, and everything is laid out perfectly for work and play. People care about making and keeping the county a great place to live.
We like to run on the Custis Trail, take our son to Quincy and Clarenford Station Parks, chat with our neighbors, and host cookouts on the huge patio out back.
Big Buns and Nandos are our quick “don’t have to worry about a reservation” spots. For a more formal meal, we love SER. We haven’t had an opportunity to check out all of the new restaurants at Ballston Quarter (there will be over 20 once construction is complete), but Punch Bowl Social is a ton of fun.
Here are all of the improvements over the past five years: walkway and patio (2014), new hot water heater (2016), new dishwasher (2017), new clothes washer (2017) and dryer (2013), refinished back room (2017) new roof (2018), new front porch (2018). We just had the interior painted, the floors refinished, and some of the carpet replaced (because the contractor messed it up while painting!).
