Happy Flag Day! Tips On How To Handle The American Flag

By

June 14th Is Flag Day! Happy Flag Day!

June 14th is Flag Day. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the American Flag on June 14th, 1777. Flag Day seems to be one of those holiday that many people are not always aware of as we don't have parades, don't get the day off from work or school. So it's easy to let the day pass without noticing.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation officially establishing June 14th as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress, even though it's not an official federal holiday. (Perhaps if it was, more attention would be paid to Flag Day.)

If you haven't yet put your flag out to fly today, go out and proudly fly the Stars and Stripes today in your front yard! Mine is already out there along with a red, white, and blue wreath on my front door. Both were put out for Memorial Day Weekend and will remain on my front porch and front door until Independence Day.

6 TIPS ON HOW TO HANDLE/FLY THE AMERICAN FLAG:

  1. Give worn out flags to the American Legion or the Boy and Girl Scouts, who burn these flags in a formal ceremony on June 14th.

  2. The American flag should never be allowed to touch the ground when taken down.

  3. The American flag should be flown only between sunrise and sunset, but if you do fly it after dark, it should be illuminated.

  4. The American flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

  5. The American flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, unless it's an all weather flag.

  6. The American flag should be positioned to the left side of your front door, not the right.

Video: The History Of The American Flag

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

I am the flag of the United States of America.

I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I stand side by side with the Maple Leaf on
the worlds' longest undefended border.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.

When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher,
my colors a little truer.

I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped — I am saluted.
I am loved — I am revered.
I am respected — and I am feared.

I have fought in every battle of every war
for more then 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Appomattox.
I was there at San Juan Hill, the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome and the beaches of Normandy.
Guam, Okinawa, Korea and KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam know me,
I was there.

I led my troops, I was dirty, battle worn and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me And I was proud.
I have been burned, torn and trampled on the streets of
countries I have helped set free. It does not hurt,
for I am invincible.

I have been soiled upon, burned, torn and trampled on
the streets of my country. And when it's by those whom
I've served in battle — it hurts.
But I shall overcome — for I am strong.

I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stood watch over
the uncharted frontiers of space from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.

When I am torn into strips and used as bandages for my wounded
comrades on the battlefield, When I am flown at
half-mast to honor my soldier, Or when I lie in the
trembling arms of a grieving parent at the grave of their
fallen son or daughter, I am proud.

Grant Schneider hi Grant... I live in a neighborhood where you see American flags flying all the time... I love it... and I love the patriotism it represents.

Nina,

What a nice post on the flag.  No doubt as we venture out this morning on our errands, I will see many flags flying,  And thank you for the instructions on how to take care of old flags.  Happy Friday.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... this seems to be a patriotic day that always some gets treated a bit as a "stepchild" of national observances. And yet, a nation's flag always represents much history and symbolism.

Joan Cox hi Joan... when I was growing up, Flag Day was something that was "celebrated." Now it seems to fly under the radar, so to speak.

These are great tips!  I remember learning these when I was a kid, but I probably haven't handled a flag since I was a kid.

Brian England hi Brian... the years I was at Girl Scout camp in the 1950's we had a flag burning ceremony each year of an old flag. And we learned how to fold the flag properly.

Nina, thanks for the excellent post. I remember when my older son was a boy scout, we did a flag burning ceremony. It was a somber but heartwarming time.

Hi Nina:

Getting to this rather late on Flag Day but a terrific informational post. I have seen flags hung the wrong way when hanging vertically!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Great Post. I sadly leave my Amercian Flag up on my house all the time (until I change it for something else.)

I need to take better care of  it..and see if I can light it up! I like that idea!

George Souto good morning, George. Many of us learn flag etiquette in the Scouts, but then forget much of what we knew as kids.

Jeff Dowler, CRS hi Jeff... no doubt that many people have no idea about flag etiquette. These days I'm happy when someone is proud enough to fly our flag even if it's not quite right.

Nina first time in four decades I forgot about about Flag Day and let me tell you no one in my neighborhood remembered either it frustrates me about my lack of focus and it annoys me about all the teachers... neighbors that failed as well... looks like I am only the one that starts it and others just blindly follow to be polite....

Endre Barath, Jr. hi Endre... I, too, am frustrated by how little children are taught these days about things/events like Flag Day. No wonder polls show that such a big percentage of young Americans are not proud to be so! Makes my blood boil when I hear that.
