The Day I Lost My Wordpress Database

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Corinne Guest, REALTOR® | Barrington Realty Company License: 471.000044

I am building another business on the side and recently started a new Wordpress website called GoldenRetrieverYears. I have made the decision to scale down real estate and get out. This will either be when we move to Wyoming or before.

A week ago Monday I launched into the site and started writing. By Thursday afternoon the entire site was put together, there were multiple pages, 4 blog posts with over 1800 words each, several affiliates set up and I retired from my desk for the weekend.

Monday arrives and I am ready to dig into the site and once more and go about buying my SSL for both. Purchase made, time to add to domains. Second site works like a dream but something really weird happened to the other. Neither I nor my host support can work out what happened and they are still digging.

My new site became a blank white page.

I recently changed hosts due to host not backing up. I had to do it manually. So I moved back to one I know did it automatically.

I now come to find out that all my files were backed up but the database was not. (I think they think I was going to set up the cron job, but I had not. )

In case you don't know and do use Wordpress the database is where all your written content is. The files had my theme and my images, video and anything else needed. That was re-intalled and now I have a wonderful looking design but no written content.

I lost about a weeks worth of work and this week I am re-writing it all over again. On Monday I was lost, literally lost as to which way to move forward. And my site was only a week old. Luckily I managed to get some back from Google's cache, 2 pages in all and 2 posts. Two stories are lost forever. 3/4 pages lost and yet to be redone.

My database is now being backed up. But just think how this could destroy your business if you rely on your website. Your hosting company may not even tell you about backups especially MySql which is where your database is.

If this had been my real estate website I would have closed my doors on Monday. That has thousands of indexed pages and posts and is my rainmaker.

It has been a struggle putting this small website back, I am a week behind in my work. One more post to re-write. Then the pages.

To top it all off on Tuesday my elderly cat was having problems and on Wednesday he crossed the bridge to heaven to be with his brothers and sisters.

I cried for the latter and almost yes almost for the first.

So if you use Wordpress, check your hosting company to see if your database is being backed up regularly. If not, do it maually. I am now doing both!

Lesson learned. Don't asssume.

Hello Coriinne - lessons may have been learned but it does sound to be a bit painful. Sorry to hear of the passing of your fuzzy feline friend. Here's to better times.

Good morning Corinne. I am sooooo soooooo sory about your cat. Nothing can fix that but I do hope when you are ready you will save another who wouldn't make it without you. The computer stuff will be fixed and now you back up.

The website looks great, you definitely know more about Wordpress than I do.  I built my website with Wordpress, but it definitely doesn't look as good as yours.  Do you have a drag and drop type editor as a plugin?  I used BeaverBuilder, I think it is called.

Losing a database is a painful event. It's great you got it mostly resolved.

I use a service called myRepono for all my MySQL DBs backups, and it's great. They also do Wordpress backups.

Btw, do you know you have the meta tag "noindex" on your website?
(<meta name='robots' content='noindex,follow' />)

Sorry about your cat.

I am sorry to hear about your cat. And losing that work, ugh, that sounds like a total pain in the you-know-what. Thanks for the warning about backing up.

This is horrible & I gasped when I read this. This also happened to me years ago & I have to say that I was in a complete funk for a month. Saying your sorry really doesn't help with all the hard work you've put in. That's why hosting sites are so important.

Sorry about your cat too.

Corinne, I'm just seeing this post now.

That was certainly not a good week for you.

Such a heartbreak to lose a pet.

Thanks for post!  It can be a painful lesson.  I simply use a virtual server and forget about a hosting service as most of them seem to have little value add.
