What could be more appropriate for my Soundtrack, than a song written by one of our pre-emanate song writers Carole King and performed by The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin? Aretha Franklin’s career was absolutely amazing. When you consider not only did she release 112 singles, she sold more than 75 million worldwide. But she wasn’t just a singer. She was a composer, world class pianist and an actress.
Just some of the notable moments in her career include her performance of Nessun dorma, the aria from the opera as a last minute replacement for Luciana Pavarotti at the 1998 Grammy Awards? And who can forget her comedic performance in the movie The Blues Brothers?
With songs like Respect, Chain of Fools, Think, and I Say A Little Prayer. We could listen to her all day long.
She has been awarded the National Medal of Arts, Presidential Medal of Freedom and a special citation from the Pulitzer Prize "for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades." Aretha was the first female to be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Since it is Carole King week, I am featuring a song written by King and made popular by The Queen of Soul, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.
The music video that I chose for today is from the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors, which included Carole King as an honoree. Even though Aretha was well into her 70s and had just battled back from major health problems, she still knocks it out of the park. It is too cool.
