Summer and Pool Safety - Why It Is A Priority

We have already had several drownings in my area and that is too many!  Please read this and never take your eyes off of children when they are in or around the pool.

We hear the sad stories all the time...toddler drowns in pool. Don't think it can't happen to you because it happens to people you never thought it would. It happens to celebrities, helicopter moms and dads and even your loving and nurturing neighbor. You can never be too safe especially with toddlers who love water. Toddlers do not see nor do they understand the danger. They think of a bathtub at bath time and the fun sitting there brings them. They have no concept and cannot differentiate between shallow and deep water. They see something to splash in, something to have fun in and that is all they need to entice them.

Statistically, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages one to four years old. While we should of course always watch our children, especially around water, if you have ever been around a toddler - you know exactly how fast they can disappear. It takes one bathroom trip on your part for the unthinkable to happen. Children are smart and very resourceful. They can work their way around a child lock sometimes better than we as adults can.

Owing a pool comes with great responsibility. Sometimes it is not even about ensuring your own child's safety, but even the neighborhood kids who may wander to your yard. How can you ensure or at least do the very best you can to prevent a drowning ?

The most obvious would be to never leave your child or any child unattended in or near water. This rule is the same across the board for pools, hot tubs, infant pools, lakes, beaches, creeks and any body of water including the bathtub and even toilets.

Pool and Water Safety Tips

Teaching your child how to swim at the earliest age possible will help to protect them if ever they are found in a vulnerable situation.

Drain covers are very important and you should always make sure they are compliant with any codes and standards pursuant to your state. Whether your home pool, a friends pool or a public pool, one should always ensure that children are taught to stay away from drain covers and that covers are compliant.

Proper barriers should always be installed. Covers, fences, and alarms to name a few, should be installed to help prevent a water injury or tragedy.

Any doors that can lead to pools should contain child locks that are high up and out of reach to children. This would include any windows.

Get CPR and First Aid certified for both children and adults. This is a life saving measure that is worth its weight in gold. Not only will you be able to help your child or loved one in the event of an accident, but you may also be able to help another parent or person if tragedy strikes in your presence.

As refreshing and fun as a pool or any body of water may be this summer, they also come with dangers and in most cases preventable ones. Be alert, always on the look out and take preventative measures.

Morning Kathy.

My parents took me to the Boys and Girls Club, a very long time ago.  It was a fun experience, learning how to swim.
