How do you follow up after being one of the Beatles, who in my opinion, were the greatest rock band ever? Well it takes some doing, but you keep going with another really good band called Wings. When most people think of the band Wings they think only of McCartney and rightly so, he was the driving force behind Wings. But one thing Paul really wanted to accomplish with Wings was to start over with a new band and create great music again. I think he accomplished his goal.
In creating Wings, Paul looked to long-time friend Denny Laine of Moody Blues fame, Irish guitarist Jimmy McCullough and wife Linda to become the nucleus of a new band. It took a little while for the band to achieve credibility. They made it a point to avoid playing any Beatles music on their early tours because they wanted showcase their new music.
The band finally achieved recognition from their album Red Rose Speedway which featured their first #1 hit My Love and James Bond theme song Live and Let Die.
In 1973 the band broke up. With only Paul, Linda and Denny remaining, the trio went to work creating the hit album Band On The Run. It became their highest selling work and reaffirmed the bands ability to create popular music.
But not everyone was happy with the sound Wings was creating. Music critics often felt the music was too light hearted with no depth. One critic complained that all McCartney could produce was “Silly Love Songs.” In 1976 Wings took up the challenge and released the album Wings at the Speed of Sound which featured the number one hit song Silly Love Songs.
Silly Love Songs is my featured song on today’s Soundtrack. The song is ranked at No. 31 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All Time. I suspect despite the critics, people like silly love songs.
