Lesson for the Week - 23JUN19

Learning never stops - at least you hope not! Will Hamm asked in the Q&A tonight, what the most important lesson we learned this week was. Thankfully I'm not in the grave yet so, learning is something that I continue to do each and every day. I remember my grandfather saying that is the key to success - keeping the mind active by taking every educational opportunity available to us. Never stop learning.

Faced with an issue that has plagued my business over the past 18 months, I asked my client if we could have a thoughtful conversation about a 'fix' for this issue. She agreed and I am confident her idea will work!

You see, my clients using a particular bank have been disappointed and left rushing to alternative financing options at least 5 times in the 12-18 months. My current client, who the bank recently let down, is a dear repeat client helped me develop an approach to have clients avoid this particular bank.

She has agreed to write a note/letter/testimonial, encouraging buyers take my advice about preferred lenders. More importantly, the last 3 of these issues I had with this particular bank, I actually specified to all three clients that I could assure them with at least a 90% confidence, that they would not Close on time, IF they Closed at all on a mortgage with this company. She, as the others, had a personal connection with someone at the bank and assured ME that they would Close on time.

Sharing and learningShe insisted that since she knew this lender, the lender (loan officer) would get the job done and "soon, she will become one of your preferred lenders!"  Well, let's just say, that didn't happen!! I needed to figure out how to convince other clients not to ignore my recommendations and being the savvy businesswoman she is, she suggested writing the 'note/testimonial' for me to share with future clients.

Because my 'solution' to this problem was obviously not doing the job (convincing buyers NOT to use this bank!), she provided me a new solution to a problem that is common to our profession that I hadn't thought of before. Not only that but, I am going to remind her to share in her letter that her interest rate is actually better with the new lender than the bank she insisted on using!

That's one of many lessons this week. What lesson did you learn this week?

Hello Debe - thankfulness is a part of learning lessons.  While at times they may not be immediately known, it's good to know there is room for opportunity.  New experiences.  A different way to look at an issue.  Even an approach that presents itself where one was previously unknown.

Debe,

Thank you for sharing about this important issue. Too often clients think they know better than us, when we are simply directing them to resources we trust to protect them from a future problem.

Hi Debe- I love the idea of thinking about what you learned this week. I know that one thing I learned was that I don't have to do everything I have on my list for the day.

And, I loved the solution you came up with!

I completely agree, Michael Jacobs! It's time to be 6' under when we believe we have nothing left to learn on this earth! LOL

Seriously, there are always opportunities to make changes & improvements - sometimes complete overhauls are warranted.

That is so true, Michelle Carr Crowe,Altas Just Call...408-252-8900! It's so nice when they recognize the issue and then also agree to help us in our own businesses. I believe she also realizes that she is going to be helping others in the future who were in the same boat she was in when this process began.

What a wonderful thing to recognize, Kathy! We always end our day by beginning a new list for tomorrow anyway - one or two items from today is not going to hurt us tomorrow.

Happy Saturday, Kathy Streib and thank you for the 'ah-ha' recognition!

I admire many senior seniors who have a desire to taking up something new. My nephew was extremely impressed to this day that his grandpa(my dad) practiced Spanish with service workers and went to adult school at the age of 70s. My aunt retired from her job at 83 with City of Berkeley, CA. After retirement she was on the internet and could build her own computer and write HTML codes. When asked how she could pick the new stuff. Sam, I used to design and built short wave transmission stations from vacuum tubes up alone. Your age has no limitation on what you want to be. You want to see my oil painting work?

What a creative and wonderful solution to this problem, Debe. Bravo to both of you. And, what a great buyer to help you out with this bank that can't deliver.  As for the lesson, my lesson this week is patience, everything is moving like molasses ( our kitchen remodel and a couple of transactions) and it's important to savor the day and let things unfold on their own time. Happy Sunday, D

Hi Debe,
Having that personal connection doesn't always result in satisfactory results, does it... especially when you're dealing with sluggish corporate policies.

We find all the time that friends in the lending industry often do not help, and often the rates and fees aremuch higher than elsewhere. Glad you found a way to counter the challenge, hope it works well for you going forward.

Happy Sunday to you too, Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD! Somehow we develop patience we never knew we had when we are dealing with home-building or renovations, don't we? I know you will be thrilled when your home is back to normal!

No and with this bank, every incident we've had with them have been because the buyer had someone who recommended them or it was the bank that they did business with - and had for years. It's a great bank for everything but, mortgages...and I don't mind spreading that word locally!

Happy Sunday, Carol Williams

Oh my gosh, I do too, Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543. After the holidays, we are going to go have a celebratory glass (or two) of wine and put together her letter! I'm really excited to have that to avoid what we have gone through the last few weeks; it's really unacceptable.

Have a great week ahead, Nick!

I've never quite understood why buyers fight our recommendations. They are based on history of seeing our stable of qualified lenders providing stellar service and making sure we get to the closing table with a minimum of drama.

I have banks I don't want people to use either. Getting a letter from a dissatisfied customer of a bank you didn't recommend could work!

Hi Debe:

That was certainly a creative solution to your problem. Obviously there is something really wrong with that lender with the repeated failures. Obvously buyers housl choose who they want to use but getting good recommendations can help, at least if it's in time.

Jeff
