Using the technology to create a clean environment

Introduction

Owing to the dire consequences of large scale use of fossil fuels and the burning of coal, the world is facing a severe environmental crisis. For starters, the fossil fuel reserves are diminishing at a rapid scale. Furthermore, the burning of these fossil fuels has given birth to global warming, which is eating away the environment. Modern technology thus can play a pivotal role in reducing the impact of global warming, and introduce an alternative for fuels for creating a cleaner environment.

Solar-Thermal Heating Collectors

The heat acquired from the sun can be captured and stored through solar panels. The solar panels absorb the sun’s energy and afterward transfer it to heat water. In this way, solar water heating systems can be used instead of traditional geysers and provide sufficient amount of hot water for the entire household. Water heating collectors come in two types: Evacuated tubes and Flat plate. However, there are certain types of solar heating that pre-heat air through solar walls.

Photovoltaic Cells or Solar Electricity

Solar energy can be used in multiple ways. One of these includes using solar energy for the sake of producing electricity. Through photovoltaic cells, the solar radiation of the sun is converted directly into electricity. Thus, solar energy can contribute significantly to creating quiet, clean, and renewable energy. Although initially, they were costly, they have now become widely available for commercial and domestic purposes for powering heavy machineries like the refrigerator or the microwave.

Biomass - fuel from wood or other plants

Biomass refers to the type of fuel attained from plants such as wood or crops primarily grown for this purpose. To avoid the increment of the amount of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, it is critical that the material burnt as fuel should come from sustainable sources. It implies that if a certain amount of trees are cut down to be used as biomass fuels, twice as many should be planted. Thus, the carbon dioxide produced during the burning of the wood is absorbed to be used as food by the newly planted trees. Biomass could be used for burning stoves and can be purchased in large quantities. It can also be used for generating electricity by burning straw or grown crops in power stations.

Ground source heat pumps

Sunlight is one of the best ways of creating renewable and sustainable energy. When the sunlight falls on the ground, the heat energy is absorbed by the latter. Consequently, the field gets heated, making it an excellent source of power. The heat pumps installed in the soil can extract the heat energy and can be used for heating different places. On the other hand, geothermal energy can also be employed for creating electricity by dint of steam turbines.

Owing to the current environmental crisis the world is facing, it is essential to employ technology for creating a cleaner environment by producing clean, renewable, and sustainable energy on a large scale.

When I read "the world" is where my faith in technology begins to falter. Until a consortium including all countries employ a planned approach a handful of them cannot change our current trajectory. The avenues are there although the realization is not. Not right now anyway! In another 500 years we'll be talking about the next Ice Age if we're still around.
