Buying a home is an amazing accomplishment, one that can set your family up for future wealth, provide security and give you the satisfaction that comes with owning your own home. But before you can become a home owner you need to get approved for a loan.
For many would be home buyers this has become a challenge, many have the income but lack the credit score to qualify. If you are in this predicament here are 3 easy steps to get on the right track. I want to give a little disclaimer, credit scores don't magically improve overnight and be very leery of anyone that promises you just that.
# 1 Credit Report - Many people don't know this but you are allowed a free copy of your credit report every year. Getting a copy of your free credit report can help you fix one of the biggest issues, which is mistakes on your credit report. Fixing mistakes on credit reports is one of the easiest way to improve your score. Here is the link to the real free credit report and not the ones you see on TV like Credit Karma, you know the ones who are trying to get you to pay for a monthly monitoring service. www.AnnualCreditReport.com is the official government sponsored site. If there are major issues on your credit report that you are uncomfortable hadling? We can provide you with a Credit Service that can assist.
# 2 ABSOLUTELY NO NEW CREDIT!- Yes, I am screaming at you. Do not apply for new credit cards, do not buy a car at 21% interest because you think you are re-establishing your credit. This will only dig the hole deeper. Every time you apply for new credit, you scores takes a ding, every time you you add more debt your score takes a ding. Repeat after me, No New Credit. No 10% off your first purchase at Kohl's, No 6 months same as cash at Nebraska Furniture Mart. I mean it, no new credit....!
# 3 Pay all of your Bill on time for 6 months - This is the simplest way to improve your credit score, it is called paying your bills. If you pay all of your current balances on time for 6 straight months, you will see an increase in your score. Paying down balances on your current cards will increase your score quicker than any other method, especially if you lower the balance enough to get under 50% of your current credit limit on that card.
I know in our instant gratification society that we want things faster but if you follow these 3 steps you can increase that low credit score to a 620 or higher in no time. In case you were wondering? 620 is the magic number to get pre qualified.
