Cell Phone Courtesy Month...Chime In!

This one should be a no-brainer since cell phones have been the norm for years and cell phone etiquette has been discussed in posts and all phone etiquetteover Cyberville.

So just to sum it up for those who have yet to get it (or if you’d like to copy this and hand it to an offender you know)...here are some helpful tips for cell phone courtesy.

And yet there are those little annoying habits that some cell phone users have that just don’t seem to go away.

For example…

~Not having Keyboard Clicks off. This one makes me want to grab the phone from the user’s hand, go into the Settings tab and turn it off for them Have you ever been in a waiting room while someone is playing a game or texting and all you hear is the clicking of the keys?

~Standing in front of someone trying to carry on a conversation and all you can do is stare at those Martian-looking pods coming from their ears.

~Not muting your phone when it rings.

You know who they are. Their phone rings...loudly. Then they pick it up and kind of stare at it with a look that says is this call for me??

~Talking while checking out. There are times when you have to take a call and it may be while you are checking out. But ask if you can call them back. It’s rude to the cashier and quite frankly, I have no desire to hear your conversation.

~Not having your phone on vibrate. Having your phone on vibrate can help alert you to a call or message so that you are not constantly picking up your phone to look at it.

~Being in a social setting and not being social because of your phone. Granted, I’ll check my email, etc when Larry and I are in the car and out running errands, but not if I’m riding with others on a trip or having dinner or drinks with them.

~Having your music playing loudly through your speaker while you are out running or jogging. I cannot tell you how many times my morning Karma has been disturbed while someone walks or jogs by with some loud tune playing for all to hear.

These are just a few cell phone user annoyances.

What are some cell phone habits that drive you nuts!

Kathy Streib Talking on speakerphone in a restaurant for all to hear...amazingly people still do this.  Alas, cellphone etiquette (or lack thereof) is merely a symptom.

Some people like being noticed. Perhaps they think it makes them look important. I say it’s inconsiderate.

Hi Kathy - the one that really drives me nuts is the person on the phone while they are checking out.  That drives me nuts.

Hi Kathy Streib I'm with you on this subject! I wonder about those folks out walking the nature presere behind our house that loudly play their music while the rest of us are simply enjoying the quiet and nature.  I try to slow way down or speed way up to get them out of my hearing path. Ahhhhhh quiet again!

Kathy I have seen people break all of those.  I wonder what the younger people today would do if you made them live for a day without a cell phone.  You know sort of like what we had to do before the age of cell phones.

I love your suggestions Kathy.  I attended a funeral yesterday morning, when someone's cell kept going off.

Hi Barbara Todaro About the only time my phone is not on vibrate is when I'm at home and don't have it on me and my Apple watch isn't on. Since we don't have a landline, I need to be able to hear it.

Wayne Martin I can only imagine what it's like.

Sham Reddy CRS you're right!!! That's a big no-no!!! Thank you for reminding me.

Donald Urschalitz I think they've gone hand-free in Texas and no texting either.

Nina Hollander oh yes. So many times I see someone thinking they're doing ok texting while they're driving. They're not!

Brenda Mayette we used to have breakfast with someone whose phone volume must have been all the way up. When the phone rang he was so slow to pick it up and then he'd stare at the screen before turning it off!!!

Brian England ok, that's funny but glad you put it on silent.

Michael Jacobs Actually, I think that Cyberville is where Steve Jobs lives, or should I say resides.

Doug Dawes Maybe you could put a note on your steering wheel to remind you to get your phone! LOL

Ron and Alexandra Seigel Things like that typically don't bother me that much unless I'm sitting in a waiting room where it's quiet. The keyboard clicks drive me up the wall.

Will Hamm People think that they can multi-task, but they can't.

Keith McMullin that is so rude!!! What are people thinking???!!!

Joseph Domino 480-390-6011 you make an interesting point!

Grant Schneider I have to admit, I've taken a call from someone I've been trying to reach (for business) while checking out but asked if I could call them right back.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 we had that happen on our walk recently. I slowed down so they would get way ahead of us. I wanted to be able to enjoy my walk in the peace and quiet of nature. (well almost...the Preserve is right next to a freeway)

George Souto I don't think they actually talk on the phone...they primarily text or whatever it is they do.

Myrl Jeffcoat ok, that's just rude and thoughtless.

Some of the mentioned above are my little pet peeves. Especially the keyboard clicks and music. That's why earphones are created. Just really SMH.

Hi Kathy Streib, we're used to our cell phones, they almost became part of our bodies and if one wants to spend more time on their phone than with those around them, by all means, do it but please..please..please.. have the courtesy of not disturbing others.

I think cell phones have become an ego thing...the more people hear it ring, the more "important" you must be ...NOT !

Yes to annoyed at all of the above. Some people just don't give a hoot though if they are bothering others or not.
