Wordless Wednesday...A Good Landlord

Our bluebird babies fledged on Saturday and while we are happy that they seem healthy enough to fly the coop, we miss being a part of their nesting process.

Larry and I took this responsibility seriously going so far as to purchase a small fridge for the garage just to hold live mealworms. Yes...we did that!

And as temps rose into the high 90’s, even reaching over 100 degrees in the afternoon, Larry tried to see if he could help to get the internal birdhouse temperatures lowered.

He made a custom insulated cover for the birdhouse, then mounted his expensive umbrella over the birdhouse. As temperatures rose, he placed a reflective covering that he’d made for the umbrella when he took it on his wilderness kayaking trip.

Then all we could do was cross our fingers and hope for the best.  If you look at one of the pictures, you can see one of the baby bluebirds peeking out!

How do you like Larry's hazmat suit??

Kathy Streib And so worth every ounce of effort - first time I saw an Eastern Bluebird, I thought I was imagining it, must be some trick of the lighting in the sky.

Hi Kathy Streib - I think your concern over the birds' welfare during the heat shows just what wonderful people you are.  You provided some great ingenuity to fix an issue that needed immediate attention. Job well done!

As a reward, you can now turn that small refrigerator into a place to store your wine and brews.  Several years ago, I bought a refrigerator for my garage that my family calls the "Party Fridge."  It's where all the beverages go, dips, cheeses, etc.

You two are people after my own heart. You went even further that I did for my birdies. It is important to clean out the house after they leave because they will come back to the same one again.

How great! Nature could use a boost every now and then.

I know someone who handpicks butterfly eggs off her milkweed because so many of them are eaten by other bugs. She then incubates them on milkweed leaves in a protected netted cage. They become caterpillars then hibernate in their cocoon for about 10 days. When they hatch as butterflies, she releases them.

Bravo to both of you!

George Souto we knew nothing about them until we saw them in our yard. In fact, I'd never even seen a bluebird until we moved to Northern VA.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel Larry loves to tinker and he enjoys the birds so much!!!

Lauren Williams, CPO I felt the same way!! They're beautiful.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® Thank you but a friend of ours asked why we didn't install a small A/C in the birdhouse.

Yes, definitely. There are a lot of aggressive birds that try to kill bluebirds and their babies. Squirrels also eat the eggs of some birds. I don't think they can get to the bluebird eggs because the hole is too small. I use to chase other birds away from the bluebird houses.
