Favorite Summer Destination in Phoenix AZ - Flashlight Tours at DBG

The flashlight tours at the Desert Botanical Garden are a favorite destination during the summer months. Every year, and every week  there are different actvities and exhibits that capture the delight and imagination of visitors - from young kids to adults. Docents and Volunteers at the garden have stories to tell about the creatures that can be found at the Garden, and wild, in Nature in our Sonoran Desert. This desert tortoise was one of the first to welcome us in the garden on the day of our visit.

During flashlight tours, we and the kids can also experience setting up a tent, crawling inside it, building a camp-fire, and roasting delicious s'mores. The spacious field, the stars, the sounds of the night desert - it's all within 15-20 minutes drive from a home in Tempe or neighboring areas of Scottsdale, Phoenix or Mesa.

As we stroll along the Garden's trails, we sometimes see the rare night blooming cactus - the Queen of the Night. It blooms only once a year, and at night only. I was able to see one in bloom a few years ago, and have saved the photo - it caught me unprepared camerawise, but still with some imagination, we can see the white flower among the sprawling branches.

It's fun to stop by the creativity stations - painting with mesquite on clay pendants, painting with glowings crayons and painting with light (the link will also show some more photos of light creations).

There are several discovery stations, as well as a telescope to see the night sky, sometimes Mars can be visible. My favorite love to tour the garden on the nights when there is full Moon, too.

If you follow my blog, this is probably not the first time you are reading about Desert Botanical Gardens, and the flashlight tours.  Here is the link to the previous blog post about the flashlight tours in published in 2017.  If you like what you are reading, please subscribe to it.

Steffy,

We have been to the gardens in daylight years ago, however, it would really be fun with a full moon to light the way.  A

Good Morning Steffy Hristova - The Desert Botanical Garden sounds absolutely wonderful! I can understand why it is a popular summer destination! My only regret is that I didn't know about it when my kids were little. However, I will be sure to pass the information on to my son. His daughter would really enjoy it and his family would too!

Experiencing the Sonoran Desert in the dark using flashlights sounds thrilling! I'm sure it is an experience no one will forget. Lady luck was with you when you spotted the flower that blooms only once a year in the dark!

Your photographs are very inviting! I would love to visit.

Setting up a campsite and learning how to do it is something kids will also enjoy and who wouldn't want to be rewarded for their efforts with s'mores! I followed the link for the paintings with light. How beautiful and what an inspiration! The paintings reminded me of the Aurora Borealis. Looking up at the sky and seeing the stars and the moon - I am so impressed. This place would make the perfect family vacation!

Thank you for sharing and for the inspiration! I really and truly hope that someone behind the scenes here on ActiveRain would FEATURE this one. This destination is a rare treat and I don't know any other state that has something like this.

Have a wonderful day and thank you!

Hello Steffy - I imagine that a flashlight tour would lead to uncovering quite a few mysteries and more than a few discoveries at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens.  A very interesting summer destination for residents and visitors alike.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel , the garden is changing all the time - new things are being added. And the light installations every year always make it look unique for the season.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. , I have only seen photos how it looked 3-4 decades ago ... The flashlight tours had just started about that time, and the name, they were called, was different, too.

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP , your comment made me look into my little booklet with reciprocating gardens and I visited several garden web-sites of the SW states, and yes, you are right - these activities seem to be quite unique for this garden.  Thank you very much for your wonderful thoughts!

Hi Michael Jacobs , it's fun looking at the city lights from some of the heights within the garden.

The garden lighting is very discreet, surfaces with white reflective coating - if you look at the white surface on the photo, it can give you some idea. Thanks for stopping by.

The desert always seems so pleasant on summer evenings.  I can imagine the flashlight tours being very popular.
