"Dost though love life? Then do not squander time

for that is the stuff life is made of."

--- Benjamin Franklin

Gone With The Wind, one of the greatest movies of all time is a classic with many memorable quotes and stupendous photography and costumes. The memorable sign outside of Twelve Oaks Plantation "Do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of" is timeless advice. The Civil War was a definite turning point in U.S. History and although Hattie McDaniel (June 10, 1893 - October 26, 1952) was no Benjamin Franklin, when it comes to challenges, life adversities and differences of opinions, nobody said it better than Mammy, "Just hold on and suck it in!"

Good thoughts and quotes about time. I haven't thought about Gone with the Wind for ages, but I remember the movie well, especially the scene just before intermission (it was a long film!) where Scarlett was scrabbling around the burned field, found a half-rotten potato, and defiantly shouted, "as God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again."

Can't remember how old I was, but that sure made an impression on me.

Hi Lottie Kendall - That scene you described was very powerful and impactful! I loved the strength and courage Scarlett showed at a time in history when it wasn't common. It was the longest movie I ever saw too and super interesting. What I especially liked is that it wasn't a chick flick, but a movie for men too, historical, romantic, heartbreaking at times, and very realistic about the struggles all people go through regardless of the historical period of time they live. There were many lessons learned from that movie, as well.

Thank you so much for your comments. They mean a lot to me.

One of my favorite movies, Patricia! Love the quotes and your post reminds me that I need to watch it again soon.

Gorgeous flowers - I love the 'accent' on the tips of the exotic pedals - so striking! We are in deep heat here and the irrigation system is definitely running full time - especially keeping the blooming shrubs and flowers alive.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I'm of the opinion a repeat movie can be just as good as a repeat client! You learn and observe more each time too. Gone with the Wind is a great movie! Thank you for letting me know you "love the quotes." That movie is filled with outstanding quotes. The writers and actors were brilliant!

My flowers are very special to me. It was a tiny single flower when I bought it. The first year, it did not bloom. Now I get three at one time every year thereafter. I really feel lucky that it bloomed considering all the rain and hail we had in Flower Mound. Those tiny purple petals that are part of the flower is really fascinating to me. I'm glad you like it.

It is extraordinarily hot and steamy here too.

I guess I should be ashamed to say that I have never watched Gone With The Wind but I do love those purple flowers.  They are beautiful.

Hello Patricica - from your post, the word that comes to me is "relationship".  That may be the a relationship with time and how we choose to spend it.  Wisely and otherwise.  The other thought is our relationship with places.  Known and still to be discovered.  From our past, our present and the future.  Time and place are related in their own unique ways.

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI, MRP - Such a lovely post with gorgeous photos. It has been a long time since I have seen Gone With the Wind. I did get to see it in a re-release in the early 1970s on the big screen. It is a classic that somehow stands up to time. The romantic relationship seems to parallel the Civil War.

Patricia it seems that people do not value time until they do not have much of it left.  The value of time needs to be realized much much sooner.
