Good People, Nextdoor, and Pets

You can take only so much of the news without wondering what the world is coming to and feeling like you want to crawl under your blanket and never come out.

And then you are reminded that there are good people in the world andgotham your spirits are lifted.

Yesterday afternoon a sweet dog wandered into our garage door which was partially open and then into our backyard. He was so friendly and thirsty!  It was after 4 and still 98 degrees out. Larry got him water and I went out in the street to see if someone was looking for him.

We decided to leave our gate opened just in case he was just out for an afternoon stroll. He was out for a stroll but wasn't leaving!

I decided to get social media involved and put his photo on Nextdoor. Within a few minutes, a very kind lady and definite dog lover contacted me to say she would take him to her vet to see if he was chipped.

She was at our house in 10 minutes and I could tell that she was like all of the other pet lovers here.

And 10 minutes after that, the neighbor of the owner messaged me with the owner’s name.

Long story short Gotham (the dog) is back home.  The power of social media...this is how it's supposed to work!

Now... pets...or to pet owners. Please do not get a pet if you plan on leaving him outside night and day and not play or interact with them.  It’s been brutally hot here day and night.

If you still want to leave your pet outside, I’ll go along with that if you first spend a week outside all day and all night..no tent or camper or Igloo cooler and no companionship.

(I’ve stepped off my soapbox now.)

Social media can be so amazing (and so awful at times). In the past, you would have needed to make a bunch of signs and post them on nearby telephone poles...lol

HI Kathy Streib,

That pooch was lucky it wandered into your garage. What are the odds?  You are a wonderful person for taking the time to help this pooch find his family.

Good afternoon Kathy. I am glad the dog is home. You would have to knock me off that box though.      Sheila

Kathy good thing Gotham wondered into your garage.  It could have been a very different outcome if it was someone less caring that found him.

Sham Reddy CRS every day I see so many posts on Nextdoor about missing and found dogs and cats. It's heartbreaking.

Wayne Martin I had to hold my tongue because it makes me so mad.

Nina Hollander I so much as told the owner that if she did not want the dog, the lady who picked her up from me to take her to the vet wanted the dog.

Donald Urschalitz something has to be done. Just this morning I saw there was another dog that had gotten loose and was found by someone.

Myrl Jeffcoat that's what I use it for!

Grant Schneider I don't understand how someone could have a pet and then not take care of them.

Michael Jacobs there are some subjects that really get me going, and this is one of them.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel we have some good people as well. In our Nextdoor thread people are getting tired of seeing lost pets or people finding strays. It's so sad.

Thank you Hannah Williams there was a neighbor we had in Florida who would let his dog get out and not be too concerned. But the dog was not "fixed" so when I suggested that he do so, the owner took it more as an assault on his own masculinity. Thank you for the feature in my fave group.

Barbara Todaro I am with you on that!  I let the owner's ex know that if she didn't want the dog or wanted to care for the dog I know of someone would take him.

Brian England I try to look for the positive but you have to wade through an awful lot of s___ sometimes.

Sharon Lee you are so sweet. Thank you.

Kathy Streib  I hope you don't mind but I also shared your  post on my Facebook business page. It upsets me that our best friends are mistreated. They love us so much.

Happy Friday

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® we all would have done the same thing. I'm glad that I didn't meet the owner face to face because I would have said a thing or two. The wonderful lady who picked him up from me to take him to her vet said her husband had to stop her from saying something to the owner.

Sheila Anderson LOL I was still on my soap box this morning when Larry and I were on our walk!  There were more dogs that are out wandering. One was found on a busy freeway here.

George Souto We have many good pet lovers in the area but that poor baby was so thirsty. I was furious with the owner.

Hannah Williams I should be thanking you!!!  On the Nextdoor thread, one person who took the time to grab a lost dog on a busy Houston freeway was chastised by someone else. His comment was that it was like stealing a dog. Give me a break.

Morning Kathy.

You just get on that soapbox anytime you want.  I think my wife is a member of NextDoor in our area, but I'm not positive

I really don't understand some people who get animals and then fail to take care of them properly. It's really heartbreaking...glad Gotham came to visit you, but sorry he has such an irresponsible owner.

I really do believe there are more good people who rescue pets than there are bad ones. Thanks for taking such good care of Gotham. Isn't it wonderful when Social Media works for the greater good? It sounds like you have caring neighbors too.

I get a lot of lost pet notifications from NextDoor.  It isn't usually too long before I see a "found" notice.
