Rocketman Soars But Shows Sores

Pondering The Movie Rocketman

Rocketman Soars But Shows Sores  This past weekend I went to see the movie Rocketman.  I hadn't read reviews prior to seeing it but was aware of the subject as a glimpse of the life of Elton John.

The movie was released with wide distribution on May 31 so obviously it wasn't at the top of my "must see" list but I am still glad to have seen it.  Again, this is more of a look at the experience and not a review.   Maybe it's just the cynic in me but I felt that the film was a bit more theatrical and felt like a Broadway type show-of-sorts for a possible live stage performances in cities across the land.  Not a bad thing just an impression.  Please no Rocketman On Ice shows!  I digress...

The other thing that came to mind as the film progressed was that it was quite similar to an opera as moments of drama were sung by cast members as the story was told in a series of flashbacks.  That could be due to my recent viewing of the documentarLuciano Pavarotti which remains memorable but also because of the pacing of the approximately two hour which for me "flew".

The sores are referenced directly and not so directly with examples of abuse of many types shown, not shown and mentioned but truly this is a salute to the well-known music of Elton John. And while the music is definitely the "star" there's no denying that this is not the entire story of Sir Elton(who served as executive producer along with husband David Furnish as producer) as this movie I learned after viewing had a rather rocky road making to the screen.

Yes, I am glad I went but it is likely recommended as an in-home experience rather than worthy of a trip to a theater for most.  Frankly, there are others that rank as a "must see" so far this year for me.

Good morning, Michael Jacobs - The song Rocketman was one of my favorites. I definitely have this one on my list to see. Elton was a breath of fresh air when he started and his music was upbeat and fun to listen to. Behind the scenes, I'm sure he had many challenges that he had to overcome. Throughout his career, I was never disappointed.  I hope he never stops playing the piano and singing.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The progression "similar to an opera," is not what I would have expected. Since I like opera, I will be interested to see how it all comes together. With Elton as Executive Producer, I'm sure it was done to perfection as he would want.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson - and I hope you enjoy the film when you see it  as I feel confident that it will make its way to a small screen eventually and likely sooner than later.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I enjoyed the film, the music and its pace.  While Elton John does seem to have a certain Midas touch to things he touches the production of this film does have moments of scars as does his life.  I imagine each of us can agree scars of all sorts are a part of our life too.  It's called "life" after all.

Not in a rush to see it Michael, although I am a fan of his music. Seems everyone has their own stories, and we may realize that it's not all picture perfect...

Oh, Sir Elton is absolutely one of my favorites, Michael! Somewhere in my keepsake boxes are several of his vinyls - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was one of my favorites. However, none of the albums of his that I own would be worth a dime - they were played ALL the time - he and Billy Joel, both!

I know his story, his scars but, I do know that there is much more that I don't know about him and I would love to see the film. Rocketman will definitely be one I'll catch - at home, at your recommendation. Thanks, Michael!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - it seems as if you are planning another "date night" as soon as you decide the winner of Charlotte's Best Steak - maybe its at  Chez Maxwell.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - I usually enjoy the theater experience compared to home movie-viewing but I'm sure many would prefer the comfort/ease of seeing it on their own.

Date nights are over for a couple of months now, Michael. I am taking hubby to Colorado for  medical procedure and will definitely be shaving a few pounds off while he's away. I'm sure when he's back home, he's going to want to venture out for date nights again and I'll be ready to eat what I want again! LOL

Michael, I saw this movie also, and left feeling sad, and know it was his family.   It was theatrical, but so is Elton, that is his life.

Interesting and not perfect at the same time or a pretty good combination thereof. I would say that’s pretty interesting in itself.

Laura Cerrano - it appears that is how life operates at times.  It's understandable, to me, that movies mimic life at times.

Michael,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Rocketman. Definitely is a musical, so easy to see how it could be adapted for the stage.

Elton John created some of the most beautiful music ever.... you can just hear them in your head... he had a way of touching an inner cord with his music...

I would love to see him play with Leon Russel one more time
