WORDS TO USE INSTEAD OF "VERY"

I use "VERY" all the time... and maybe only half of column #2...Do you?

Here is a short list.... But I found out - at list 147 words can be used instead.

Three Telling Quotes About ‘Very’

  1. “Substitute ‘damn’ every time you’re inclined to write ‘very;’ your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be. ~Mark Twain
  2. “‘Very’ is the most useless word in the English language and can always come out. More than useless, it is treacherous because it invariably weakens what it is intended to strengthen.” ~Florence King
  3. “So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys – to woo women – and, in that endeavour, laziness will not do. It also won’t do in your essays.” ~N.H. Kleinbaum

This is a very good, I mean excellent, post.  Some famous writer, I can't think of who, said never use two words when one word will do.  Great reminder to all of use to be specific and concise in our communicating.

English has many variations for the same word. I love using a Thesaurus when I write because I'm reminded of the richness of the language. Fun post!

Tatyana - How cool is this post!  It is so easy to get into a rut of using the same words to frequently.  I know I do.  This is a big help.  Thank you for sharing.

Exceptional list, however, it depends to whom you're communicating, doesn't it? Sometimes simple words like very are better to use. Regardless, a great post.

If folks haven't yet, read On Writing, by Stephen King.

You essay is perfect. Nothing more to add. Except, using adverbs is also not a good idea. Words ending in "ly" are weak and don't add much. Eliminating them turns passive into active sentences.

Clever post!  It can be tempting to be lazy with copy...but I find if I write a paragraph or two, then leave it, when I go back to it I can spruce it up a bit with little effort. The word I find myself using too often is 'hopefully'.

Thanks for post!! Yes we do tend to use the same word(s) over and over again.  Seems the further we get into the electronic/digital age the less creating and lazier we become.

That's really true. Will make me re-think using that word - it's just fluff when you can sound so much better.

Of course, Marte Cliff loved this.
