Dora Colvin

Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Dora Colvin was raised in North Dakota on a farm. Sorry I don’t have any other data except to note she started working as a teacher. She retired in 2010 and now lives in Udall, Kansas. Nothing to get excited about, right? Well hang on because the following is the rest of the story, so let’s get to it. If you haven’t figured it out this one is going to be short.

During the summer while school was in recess she traveled with her husband Butch, a truck driver. In 1965, she was the first woman to hold a CDL license in Kansas. In 1972, she was the first woman to drive for Stanley Dilley a produce company. In 1992, she was the first woman to drive for the chemical company Wynne Tank Lines. In 2004, she and her husband were named Company Team of the Year for CFL. She has driven over 2 million miles without an accident. She was a trail blazer for women to the trucking industry.

Now there's a career you don't always think of for women...and good for her breaking into a male dominated field and winning !

Good morning,  James - here is another example where there is often so much mire beyond the surface of a story.

Good morning, James Dray it's difficult enough to be granted the CDL license to drive commercial vehicles.... in my opinion, the best drivers are those behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler.... and I have seen a few women controlling those vehicles....

That Dora is my kind of woman, James... braeking new ground and opening a path for other women. I say that because when I entered the corporate world in 1972 in corporate finance, you did not see women in that field. And when I was a VP at The Bank of California in 1974, I was only one of three or four female officers in the bank.

PS I knew I was right when I said women are better drivers!

Hi James Dray - This is quite a feat considering what it takes to work in what was once a traditional male-dominated job. Following the 5 Seeing Habits and using defensive driving skills helps give a driver an advantage to a safe driving career. Dora obviously was trained well and applied those skills.

Hmm, sounds like an interesting woman.  I will have to ask my friend that is a truck driver if he has ever heard of her.

Two million miles without an accident? She deserves some kind of an award for such a safe driving record.

Hi James,  A friend of mine in college was determined to be the first women to drive for a local company.  I'm not sure if she was the first, but she did drive for a couple of companies in the area.

I have never seen a woman truck driver.  Remarkable story and over 2,000,000 miles without an accident?!?  Wonderful!  Two million mile record was already enough of a record for me.
