Location was much more important to me. The perfect house had to be in walking distance from the train, the main shopping district and the house of worship that we attend. Additionally, a terrace, private garage and pet-friendly, flexible condo rules were on that list.
Naturally, it also had to fit into our budget. I simply could not compromise on those features and with those constraints in place, finding a home was not easy. The process actually took 18 months.
Walkability-A Great Feature to Grow Old With highlighted this trend. Walkability was not a term familiar to many when I wrote this post in 2013. Way before it had a name, this is how I lived.
If you happen to live in the city, you need do nothing else as it comes with the territory. However, if you live in the suburbs, as I do, only a concerted effort aimed towards having this feature will give it to you.
Since it was so crucial that I find it, I was more than willing to compromise on decor or other nonessentials. You can and should always make a house your own. Arguably, it make take some time but, anything worth having, is normally worth waiting for.
Like the Goldilocks fairytale, in the end, the space I decided on was just right. It's lovely, comfortable and just the perfect size. Above all, I made certain that walkability was checked off my list.
