Does your mindset really matter?

To those who prefer to focus on strategy and execution, mindset seems like a bit of a fluffy idea. It’s hard to pin down or plan for, so it gets skipped.

But the reality is that what you think affects what you do. It impacts what you think is possible, what you think is worthwhile, and what you spend most of your time on.

So, let’s take some time to look at your mindset about marketing.

Assessing Your Mindset

If you had to answer this one-question quiz, what would you say?

My thoughts about marketing my real estate business are:

  • A) Ugh, really? Why can’t I just sell homes?
  • B) Gotta do it. When it’s out of the way, I can get to the stuff I love.
  • C) Marketing is my core focus. It’s how I live my dream! 

Most small business owners, including Realtors®, are in A or B. What you might not realize is that if you can shift your thinking to answer C, you’ll be much more effective in your work.

Marketing is How You Do What You Love

When you got into real estate, you had reasons to do it. You had dreams. You had a strong reason to choose this career over any other.

That reason wasn’t likely a love of marketing! However, that doesn’t change the fact that marketing is how you get to do what you love. Whether it’s attracting buyers so you can help them find their dream home, or selling homes so your clients can move on, marketing is the key.

How does that change your feelings and commitment to doing things like social media marketing and sending farming postcards? Realizing that marketing isn’t an interruption to what you love, it’s the fuel for it can change everything about your approach.

Commit to Consistent Success

No matter what you’re doing, it’s more fun if you’re good at it and you’re succeeding. Consistent, year-round marketing is how you get there. Once you realize that marketing isn’t a hassle, it’s fuel for your dream, you’ll find it much easier to follow through.

It's a shame that real estate schools don't teach new agents that marketing is an important part of their job - and then teach them something about how to go about it.

Looking back, when I left the real estate team I was on, I should have had a marketing brand in mind...now I think it's too late.  Esp with social media, it's so important--and that wasn't 'a thing' when I started out!
