Branding Colors: Can You Hear The Sound of Color?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants

We are always fascinated by color combinations can work together and catch our attention.  We both have often remarked that certain colors speak to us.  And in our real estate related branding work we research the colors that our clients like that speak to them.

As we delve into working with color combinations, we will ask our clients: "does this speak to you?"  It has to resonate, or as defined in the dictionary to relate harmoniously to that client or company.

Recently I read a book about people who actually hear in colors.  This is called synesthesia.  Not all those individuals are necessarily musicians, some are artists, and some are not.

People with synesthesia related to music may also have perfect pitch because their ability to see/hear colors aids them in identifying notes or keys. The colors triggered by certain sounds, and any other synesthetic visual experiences, are referred to as photisms. (Wiki)
Wassily Kandinski, a Russian artist, was known for his abstract paintings and the use of bright colors as pictured above in this photo of the Church of St Ursula (public domain photo).

Although he was not a musician, he talked about the sound of color.

"The sound of colors is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with base note, or a dark lake with the treble."

"Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul."

And here is my favorite quote,

"Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and... stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to 'walk about' into a hitherto unknown world. If the answer is yes, what more do you want?"

Can you hear the sound of color?

Lise Howe definitely some colors are discordant.  However, when you are in a room where the colors harmonize with you, you are bound to feel peace and harmony...that is how you hear colors.

There certainly is a mood to color.  It comes through loud and strong in the first photo.  In the second picture of the painting.  It feels a little too busy or confused.  Perhaps it's the color combination.  I'm going to do what Michael Jacobs would do, and ponder more about the sound of color.

Myrl Jeffcoat Think of The Sound of Music...those beautiful hills evoked all that singing, where does it come from.  Vibrations exist in everything animate or inanimate...vibration is what sound is about...some can hear it, and some can train themselves to hear it...A

That first photo is remarkable!!! I love the colors so much that I would not have been able to tell you what the flowers were until after I saw it the second time. I remember reading books by the late Pat Conroy. His words were like music to me.

Just an hour ago, one of my daughters who has been a teacher for a number of years now sent me 5 photos of her new, large classroom with one large wall newly painted in a soft purple adjacent to light tan walls. Of course we got into a discussion on the meaning behind color.   The Internet gave several definitions behind the color purple (e.g.) sacred, spiritual, magic, imagination, creativity, fulfillment...
I love the vibrant colors in your photo of the flowers, Alexandra.

Kathy Streib I read every Pat Conroy book.  He was so lyrical in his descriptions, and if you have not read it, I would suggest buying his cookbook.  It is full of great stories and the best crab cake recipe you will taste.

I don't think I hear music when I see colors, but I do get a very visceral reaction to colors. Shades of green and teal colors soothe me, and are extremely pleasing. They feel good. Golds are also very appealing.  Reds, cobalt blue, and other rich colors are also appealing, but I prefer them as accents.

I just passed LJB growers (not LBJ) and saw lots sunflowers smiling at me from the road. Now I realize they grow not for seeds but for flower arrangement.

As always you shoot great photos.

Have a great Sunday,

An intriguing post for sure, Ron and Alexandra. I can't say I can hear in color but certain (favorite) colors remind me vividly of certain things that make a sound...blue for the ocean for example.

That's a beautiful painting - I have always liked Kandinsky's work.

Jeff Dowler, CRS it is such a pleasure for me to hear that you know Kandinsky's work.  I still recall the cover of the book where was his one works was on the cover of the book on Russian Art, when I took a class at USC.  Everything on the planet whether still or moving has a distinct vibration, some can hear the sounds...What a gift that must be, but then I presume it could be a curse.  A
