Can I Come In Where It is Cool?

By
Real Estate Agent with Vision Quest Realty WV0026375

I noticed our chocolate lab, Zeke, was acting funny. Usually, he barks when there is a deer out in the yard. Well, it was not a deer, but a black snake on the porch looking through the storm door.

With the high temps we've been having this week, I think this black snake was definitely looking for a cool place. He thought our front porch was the place to be or perhaps inside the house. My husband goes out with a long rake and got the snake off the porch and it takes off to the woods.

There will be no cooling off on my front porch! Especially for snakes.

With the heat nowadays, it's not surprising to see one or two around. We need to be extra careful.

That is a VERY big snake, Rebecca. Is that kind of snake agressive or poisonous?

Ugh. I shuddler to think of a big snake like that on my porch. I have run into a couple of small garter snakes in the garden this year - or maybe the same one twice. Just a baby about a foot long. It saw me and hurried to find a place to hide.

When my firstborn was about 10 or 12 he liked to catch them in the river and bring them to me to pet.

Rebecca,

When we lived in Napa in the country, one of our cats would bring snakes, and even found one here in the hills.  They all were harmless, and we would plop them in a garbage can, and drive them to unpopulated areas.  A

I would definitely not want to see that on my porch.  Is it a poisonous snake?  Whether it is or not, I wouldn't want it on my porch, haha.

Well no wonder Zeke was excited! Barney goes nuts when he sees a little bunny that visits us every day!  But a snake.....he's never run across that!

Leif Price - yes, with the heat the snakes are wanting a cool place.

Kathy Streib - my heart did skip a beat when I saw the snake looking in :)

Tatyana Permanova - my husband had a rake and was outside without shoes

Myrl Jeffcoat - black snakes are not aggressive unless of course if they are looking for food. They are not poisonous.

Marte Cliff - I don't want to pet any snakes. Garter snakes want hurt you but still snakes...

Barbara Todaro  I agree wouldn't want a snake on my front porch when I had guests.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - our office manager said that they had rattlesnakes and were told to cut their heads off and bury the head. If not the head would continue to move and bite....UGH

Sheila Anderson - just glad the snake was outside :)

Nina Hollander - I definitely don't like them. Now, when I open the door I look before letting the dog out.

Brian England - no black snakes are not poisonous...they can be very long. My friend said she saw a snake moving very slow and had a big hump in it that was a rabbit (they think) and once the snake had digested the rabbit, they killed it. Not sure why they waited.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 - Zeke didn't know what to do. And, I was so glad it was on the outside looking in :)

Sharon Lee - now I never leave the door open too long for Zeke to go out or in, as I am now scared a snake may come it.

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® - Once again Zeke proved, a dog is man/woman's best friend! Don't you love his sixth sense?

I hope that snake slithered into another space where he'll (or she'll) be of no bother to frighten another human or their pets. I'm sure glad Zeke wasn't bitten and neither were you or your husband.

Have a safe and happy August!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - indeed Zeke proved himself. Last time I saw a big black snake was on the brick patio of our townhome in Annandale, VA.  I am guessing brick is cool for them when the temps go up.

Grant Schneider , I don't want snakes around me and this one was just too close. My husband gets a rake and gets it to slither down the steps and out into the woods.
