I can name a few Realtors that would like this!

Today I was processing (my fancy word for opening) my mail.  I was totally taken back from a bill that I received.  In February I was interviewing landscape designers and landscaping companies.  I met with one particular woman, a landscaping designer, who designed the yard for a customer of mine.
I liked her... enough.  However, my husband was not blown away with her ideas or her.  She was also extremely pricey... $2000.00 just for plans.  We ended up not hiring her for the job.

Well today I received an invoice from her for $500.00.  I called her to ask her "why am I getting this bill?"  To me she replied, "for my time".  I chuckled.  She then continued, "after we met, I started to design the job".  At that point I had to chime in.... "But, you were never given the job".  OK, so you see where this went.

I apologized that she has jumped the gun and started designing.  I also told her that I was sorry but there was no chance that I'd even consider paying this bill.  I also explained, and maybe I shouldn't have, that she really muddied the waters for the potential of future business or referrals from me.

I hung up the phone....floored.  I started to think that I'm going to start charging people for CMA's, showings that never materialize and such.  What do you think?  Sounds like a great idea huh?  I'd be retired!

Hmmm.  I think I will charge per showing for buyers.  The less they see, the less it will cost them.  I will still expect my full commission later when I sell them something.

She must have ingested too much fertilizer. Either that she was an attorney in her former life.

That must have been a fun conversation.

My husband & I are both in sales. He spends hours working up proposals, for the environmental construction company he works for, that sometimes go no where... that is sales! We propose what we can do & hope to be hired. Shame on her for jumping the gun. She handled herself very unprofessionally by not advising of her $500 fee up front.

Sara,

I really enjoy your posts. I agree we should charge for our time. I actually had this idea of billing for my time unfortunately my broker wouldn't go along with the idea.

I've heard of some agents in our area billing for their time; but most of the brokerages here won't have it. I'm a believer of what goes around comes around. I may put in many hours and not get compensated, but then I may get a large compensations from somewhere else. I really would feel like I'm taking advantage of people if I charged by the hour.

Karen,

I agree, billing for my time is not something I'd seriously consider.  It was a tounge and cheeck.  I agree that what goes around comes around.  But it is fun to fantasize about!

Now, if we could bill our future clients for all the marketing it took to get them...

I used to refer a particular loan officer to my buyers when they requested help or needed a prequal. Strangely enough I found out when my son was going to use him that he billed everyone something up front.  My son got stuck paying him $800+ even though he wound up going with someone who could process his loan in the time frame he needed.  Not smart I thought as I pondered his reasoning.

I referred a lot of people to him.  I even had him handle my refi.  His problem was he felt abused by people who had him do a prequal and then went with someone else.  Ring any bells here?  CMA anyone?  Needless to say I stopped referring anyone to him and his only sin -- he just wasn't a businessman.  He was shortsighted and couldn't see past the next loan.  Too bad because he was as honest as the day is long.

And, BTW, if the whole blog thing has you unglued, I'd stay loose.  You're not missing a thing.

I think we need to start the clock when our phone rings, kind of like the attorneys do...you know a five minute phone call is 15 minutes of billable time...right?

James,

She probably spent an hour and a half at our house.  You can still puke!

You interviewed a landscape designer in February, and six months later received a bill?? I hope that their production schedules are a little more efficient than their bookkeeping!

It was presumptuous of this designer to start work on the project and ludicrous for them to send a bill. No contract, no payment.
