San Jose, the "capital of Silicon Valley" in Santa Clara County, Calif. is full of fun-and mostly free-actitivies to enjoy during the summer.

In San Jose, people from all over (not just citizens of San Jose) can partake in these many free cultural and community-building events.

From playing in the Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park Fountains to free movie nights, free concerts in local parks to free Shakespeare in the Park and even to free "Senior Safaris" at Happy Hollow Park and Zoo and the low-cost Santa Clara County Fair ($5 per person), San Jose is filled with fun.

Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park Fountains and Water Play. In the same space that famously houses San Jose's Christmas in the Park from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, are water fountains. When my children were young, we would join in and splash around too. Today, I think this big kid might inadvertently scare off the little kids! Playing in-or even just teasing and toe-touching-the fountains is a great way to quickly cool off on hot days in the City.

Free Movie Nights, Concerts and Shakespeare at Local Parks.  This summer featured a variety of bands and fun familySenior Safari image in numerous parks in all parts of the city. As part of the effort to "take back" parks from gang members and other desirables, San Jose has focused on bringing in lots of free family-focused entertainment.

Senior Safair at Happy Hollow Park and Zoo. On select fourth Thursdays between 8am-9:59am, seniors 50 and better enjoy free admission to Happy Hollow Park and Zoo.

Seventy-Fifth Annual Santa Clara County Fair. Originally, the Santa Clara County Fair's focus was on agriculture, from livestock to baking contests. It also featured a beauty contest. Today, students from Future Farmes of America (FFA) still show and sell their pigs, rabbits, cows and steers at "The Fair." The 2019 Santa Clara County Fair runs from August 1-4 and costs only $5 per person. There is separate admission for certain concerts as well as the midway rides. The Fair also boasts nightfireworksly fireworks.

All of these events make San Jose a great place to enjoy summer fun.

The foutains are roughly where the City Hall used to be. I left old PO there in the photo to show the direction. This City Hall was painted red as you may recall. I was at Marriott a couple blocks south on 1st street recently. Still look dumpy other than the shocking Craftsman home prices. A parking attendent left me a $71 fine park in front a home in an alley on Sunday.
