2018 Tax Free Shopping Weekend In Charlotte, NC AreaMARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR AUGUST 2-4! SALES TAX-FREE BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING WEEKEND 2019 IN CHARLOTTE REGION

If you live in the Charlotte metro area, you can take advantage of South Carolina's sales tax-free this weekend starting tomorrow, Friday, August 2nd and through Sunday, August 4th.

North Carolina eliminated its tax-free shopping weekend for back-to-school in 2013, so if you want to shop for back-to-school items tax-free your only choice is to head across the state border to York or Lancaster Counties in South Carolina. However, the trip may just be worth it to save 6% state sales tax and any other local taxes when you buy school supplies for the coming school year in South Carolina. This is South Carolina's 20th year offering a Back-to-School Tax Free Weekend and shoppers are expected to save an estimated $2-3 million on qualifying items.

WHAT YOU CAN AND CAN'T BUY TAX-FREE IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Tax-free items include purchases of:

  • Clothing
  • Accessories (such as bedspreads and linens.)
  • Footwear
  • School supplies (such as bookbags.)
  • Computers
  • Computer equipment (such as printers.)

Tax-free items do not include purchases of:

Tips To Make The Most Of Your Tax-Free Weekend Shopping

TaxFreeWeekend.com provides the following tips on how to make the most of your tax-free shopping:

1. Take some time to research what is tax free.

2. Don’t assume only back-to-school are tax free.

3. Get organized before the weekend. Take an inventory of what you have on hand and what you need. Make a list of what you want and need to buy.

4. Make sure the tax free savings outweigh savings from other types of coupons. And don't forget that many coupons can be combined with tax free savings.

5. Watch the register closely to be sure you are getting the tax savings you are entitled to. Verify on your receipt that you did not pay sales tax after the purchase.

6. Know your prices and be sure something really is a deal. Don’t buy something just because it is tax-free.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila and Larry... and that's exactly why I'll be avoiding retail areas in South Carolina for the next three days!

Grant Schneider hi Grant... I know... hard to believe a new school year is upon us. NC got rid of its tax free weekend some years ago, but as we are on the SC border it's easy to take advantage of the tax free shopping.

Nina,

What a wonderful opportunity to pick up school supplies tax free.  I have not seen this in our area, some of the stores like Office Max have in the past offered school supplies tax free.  They paid the taxes.  A

Good morning, Nina - from reading such  "tax free" ActiveRain posts over the years I have become more familiar with this concept.  I am sure back to school shopping benefits from some tax free shopping in Charlotte and your post does a nice(and effective) way to showcasing it.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... many of our states have tax free weekends for back to school. South Carolina is now in its 20th year. North Carolina stopped it some years back and I believe loses a lot of business to our neighbor to the south each August.

Michael Jacobs hi Michael... the tax free shopping weekend is huge, huge, huge in this area. A $2-3 billion savings in taxes for consumers in one weekend is an astronomical figure if you ask me.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS hi Paul... unfortunately, the state of North Carolina understands nothing... they got rid of their tax free shopping weekend some years ago... those of us in the Charlotte region go over the border to South Carolina where they do understand and have done so now for some 20 years. I'm convinced that NC loses an awful lot of sales each year for back to school items to our neighbors south of us.
