Friday Photo: A Hidden Owl in "Knowledge!"

When we lived in Los Angeles, we had an owl pair that lived in our 15 foot tall pittosporum tree.  We loved hearing them hoot at night fall.  In Napa, we had white owls that would show up and sit on the tall gate posts.We appreciated that they kept the vermin at bay.

These days, we spot them in the Salt Marsh Reserves behind our homes.  They are regal looking birds, and I felt this sculpture captured the look and knowledge!

Wishing you all a great weekend.

A wise old owl sat on an oak;
The more he saw the less he spoke;
The less he spoke the more he heard;
Why aren’t we like that wise old bird?

What a wonderful display that is, Alexandra.  Several years ago, I had a pair of palm trees in my yard.  There was a family of owls up there for a few years, until a severe windstorm took out the top of the palm tree.  I miss them.

I have never seen a owl in the wild, only in captivity.  That is a beautiful sculpture.  I learned about a new tree. Never heard of a pittosporum tree. Must be native to your area.

Hello Alexandra and Ron - I don't recall hearing that nursery tale before but I like it as well as the quote and photo.

Myrl Jeffcoat When we moved after 18 years of living there, I did miss them.  One year one of their hatchlings fell and our sweet Tuxedo cat showed us without any attack on his part.  We gingerly placed it on a branch with gloves on to make sure our scent was not there, and sure enough the parents found it.

Sharon Lee Pittosporum are beautiful trees.  We had 8 of them, and they bloom in spring with white clusters of flowers.  You walked by and had a wonderful light aroma akin to jasmine...I did not see them in Napa, and I may have spotted one here, but I was not sure if it was pittosporum.  A

Michael Jacobs the nursery rhyme was new to me also.  Perhaps it is a British one.  A

Ron and Alexandra- it's been ages since I read that nursery rhyme.  I heard an owl just the other night and haven't seen it.

Morning again Alexandra.

We have one or more living just beyond the pond across the street from our place.  Sad thing is they are starting to build that area up.

I love hearing them too. We had one out there last month and I enjoyed listening to the resonance sound of the hooting. It was quite relaxing. D

Hi Alexandra... I never heard that nursery rhyme, but I like it! I like it alot! The owl is the symbol of my sorority so I have a certain affection for owls and have a gold on on my charm bracelet, as well.
