We had our historic first PFLAG Niceville meeting last month. It went better than I imagined. 33 people and one dog attended.
Everyone agreed to not take pics of people there at the meeting to respect those that may not be out or comfortable with their picture being taken. This is the outside of the church in Valparaiso with a rainbow flag. There were pics of the group after the meeting for those that wanted to have their pic taken with the group but no pressure for anyone to do so.
Shortly after I moved here I remember a sign at the church across from Niceville high school with a message of condemnation of homosexuality that Niceville high school today has a Gay Straight Alliance.
I remember George W push for anti gay sentiment to get elected worked and spilled into the next election for Mccain and it didnt work that time against one of the most popular presidents ever.
That year Okaloosa Florida passed Amendment 2 by over 70 percent to make a Florida constitution that stated one man one woman, I remember those signs in front of many homes and businesses that say one man one woman. Okaloosa county today has a church with a rainbow flag in front of it.
This is from the PFLAG Facebook page:
"A diverse group of all ages, sexes, genders, sexualities, along with family members and allies offered great love and support to each other. There was a power in that room--the power of love--that began a process of healing, strengthening, and empowering of those who were there."
If you are in the area I hope you will invite your friends and family members to join us for our next meeting: Sunday, August 11th at 6:00pm. (We always meet on the Second Sunday at Six).PFLAGNiceville.org
