NORTHWEST FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE PRESENTS: "THE INVISIBLE PROBLEM OF GENDER AND SEXUAL PRIVILEGE"
1) Book Club:
The NWFSC Diversity and Inclusion Committee Book Club Presents: _Seeing Straight: An Introduction to Gender and Sexual Privilege_, by Dr. Jean Halley and Dr. Amy Eshleman. Everyone from NWFSC and the outside community is welcome. The Book Club will meet from 4:00-5:00pm at the NWFSC Barnes and Noble Cafe on the following dates to discuss these chapters:
Thurs. Sep. 5: Chapters 1-2
Thurs. Sep. 26: Chapters 3-4
Thurs. Oct. 17: Chapters 5-6
Thurs. Nov. 7: Chapters 7-8
2) Film Screening:
The NWFSC Gay-Straight Alliance and Film Club Presents: A free screening of _A Fantastic Woman_ (Sebastian Lelio, Chile, 2017, Rated R), followed by a discussion of how gender and sexual privilege works in the film. This will be Monday, November 18, at 6:30pm in Building 110, Room 328 (the film classroom). Everyone from NWFSC and the outside community is welcome.
3) Authors Visit:
The NWFSC Humanities and Fine Arts Dept. Presents: “The Invisible Problem of Gender and Sexual Privilege”: a visit with Dr. Jean Halley, Professor of Sociology at the College of Staten Island and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and Dr. Amy Eshleman, Professor of Psychology at Wagner College. They are the authors of _Seeing Straight: An Introduction to Gender and Sexual Privilege_.
Thursday, November 21
11:00am: Conversation with the Gay-Straight Alliance (by invitation only).
2:00pm, Building 110, Tyler Recital Hall: Training on Gender and Sexual Privilege (for all faculty, staff and administrators of NWFSC.)
7:00pm, Building 100, Sprint Theater: Talk on Gender and Sexual Privilege (for all students, faculty, staff, and administrators of NWFSC and the outside community.) A book signing will follow. Barnes and Noble will have copies of the authors' works for sale.
You can help us by:
1) Purchasing _Seeing Straight: An Introduction to Gender and Sexual Privilege_ and begin reading it right now. It will open your eyes to the ways members of the LGBTQ community and women have been invisibly and systemically denied power and privilege. 2) Attending these events.
3) Encouraging your co-workers, friends, and family members to attend these events.
4) Pondering ways you can use your privilege to better help those around you who have traditionally been denied privilege.
