1964 – Prometheus, a bristlecone pine and the world's oldest tree, is cut down. At the time it was estimated to be 4844 years old. In 2012 a bristlecone pine in California's White Mountains was measured a5062, making it the oldest known tree in North America and the oldest known individual tree in the world.
