1947 – Thor Heyerdahl's balsa wood raft the Kon-Tiki, arrives in the Tuamotu Islands after a 101-day, 4,300-mile journey across the Pacific Ocean. Heyerdahl’s journey attempted to prove it was possible that pre-historic people could have traveled from South America to the Polynesian Islands.
1965 – The first “Reyes party” between Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters and the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang occurs at Kesey's property in La Honda, California, introducing psychedelic drugs to the gang world and forever linking the hippie movement to the Hell's Angels.
