Sewer cleaning - How to deal with clogged pipes in your home

Gurgling drains, bad smells and water that doesn't want to drain properly are all clear signs of pipe blockage. In this case, sewer cleaning is unavoidable and should be carried out as soon as possible in order to avoid the worst. You can find out here how blockages can occur and how best to proceed when cleaning sewers.

This is how pipe and sewer blockages occur

A pipe blockage can have different reasons and different degrees of blockage. The reasons for simple blockages are mostly hair, food leftovers, fat deposits or foreign objects in the drain. These can usually be easily removed with a pipe cleaning agent or various aids. On the other hand, more severe blockages occur gradually, usually over a period of years. Here any kind of dirt and lime residue is deposited, which gradually narrows the canal and finally clog it. A drying phase that lasts too long can also lead to acute deposits in the sewer pipe.

Repair simple blockages yourself

In the case of slight blockages, even a small cleaning of the sewer is sufficient. Various pipe cleaning agents can be used for this purpose. These agents are available both as chemical hammers and as environmentally friendly organic products in granulate, powder and viscous form. Also a plunger or a pipe cleaning spiral can be used however very purposefully with the channel cleaning. While the plunger creates a negative pressure and thus releases the blockage through movement, the pipe cleaning spiral works directly in the pipe. The spiral is carefully inserted into the pipe and pushed forward with only little pressure. In this way, the claw drills through the dirt and loosens it. Afterwards you should rinse generously with water so that the remaining dirt is also washed into the sewer system.

Professional sewer cleaning for severe blockages

Even if smaller blockages can often be repaired by yourself, you can still get professional help in the house. For large blockages, on the other hand, you should definitely contact a company for professional sewer cleaning. This includes, for example, the blockage of several drains at the same time, blockages that are too stuck or those that are directly in the sewer. The professional specialist has clearly more experience and skill in his trade and has the necessary tools for the sewer cleaning. Also the regional craftsmen know the entire pipe network and know on what they must pay attention. In order to find the exact point of clogging, a sewer camera is used in most cases. Depending upon problem, the blockage is removed afterwards by milling machine, acids or other means.

Conclusion

A simple blockage can be remedied by simple means. For large blockages or even a sewer blockage, a professional sewer cleaning should be carried out by a specialist.

Thanks for post and tips.  And sometimes helping with sewer blockage is as easy as prevention, too many people put things down their drains that really are only asking for trouble.  Even the so called "flushable wet wipes" are often no so flushable.

Since this is something that most home owners over look until an event happens. Home owners should consider  having their sewers  and pipes clear added to the list of things to do prior to putting their homes on the market or before an inspection.
