I stop by Second Chance in Baltimore once a month or so, and I always look forward to it.
For one, I support their mission "to provide people, materials and the environment with a second chance", and I also love to hunt for treasures. I don't always score but that's half the fun.. browse, envision, dream up new project, hunt, find, take home. Last month I really lucked out at Second Chance. I had to redo my shower surround in one of my bathrooms and had a very clear vision of what I wanted it to look like in the end. I searched up and down the tile aisles at the orange big box store as well as the blue one but wasn't impressed. I checked tile specialty stores and experienced sticker shock. I went to Second Chance and found just the right tiles, at just the right quantity, and at a price that can't be beat.
A bit of luck was involved that day, too - sometimes you've got to check twice or three times to find just what you are looking for. Don't get discouraged if you walk out empty handed after your first treasure hunt.
On the day I scored the tile, I also spotted some metal kitchen chairs. Those weren't on my list but I really liked them and I was planning on replacing my old ones down the road anyway. The tile was my priority that day however, so I didn't purchase them but checked the sticker for mark down days.
That's the way it works at Second Chance.. if materials don't get a second (or third or fourth...) chance quickly, they'll be marked down until they find a new home. My chairs' next mark down date was at the end of the month. Knowing that I was taking a chance of the chairs not being there, I crossed my fingers and made plans to return a couple of weeks later. When I made it back, 4 of the chairs (there were a lot more first time around) came home with me!
Have you been to Second Chance yet? It's truly worth a visit. Head on over there to treasure hunt, find a new table to refinish, or an old window to repurpose, or just the right piece of trim to match the old one in your house, or a set of new chairs, or the perfect tile... you just never know the treasures you will find at Second Chance!
P.S. Second Chance accepts donations of the items that you no longer have a need for. Donating them to such a great organization is much better than dropping it off at the dump. Please consider doing so! You never know who would love to give your unwanted items a second chance.
