1942 – Silver screen actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil receive a patent for a Frequency-hopping spread spectrum communication system that later became the basis for modern technologies in wireless telephones, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. At the time of its invention, it was deemed so vital to national defense that government officials forbid the publication the details of how it worked. Both were inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
