So The Answer Is In The I...

Pondering I

So The Answer Is In The I...  You likely know of the phrase that references....in the eye of the beholder.  Typically it is attached to appearance as "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".  And you certainly don't have to think about it too long.  Much like any opinion...it can and does vary.  Definitely subjective. Yes, an I for an eye.  Sorta.

I have known for quite some time that we should not emphasize "I" when writing or speaking.  The blog posts of ActiveRain member Marte Cliff advise us of tips that can be used for improvements in effective communication.

Your opinion matters.  Of course.  But in balance.  We likely understand the importance of the other person.  Our clients.  Friends and family.  Collaborators of all forms.  In any method of communication.

Think of the other person.  Not just you.  Put yourself in their place.  Their head.  Thoughts and thought processes.  The questions they ask.  And, the answers.  As usual, listening matters.  Careful listening matters even more.

I am a tale, I am a book, written in different languages and styles

I can't be read, can't be understood,

neither of by me nor the greatest of minds.

I am too big, I am too small, to be processed or seen by the naked eye

I am too dim.  I am too bright,

to appear in the shadows or the sunshine.

                                                                                        Sanober Khan

I have been pondering about the power of I because it's not always about you.  An I for an I.  Well, maybe.    How do we see the other I? Pondering. Wondering.   About I.   And, of course, other things too.

I likely use "I" more than I should.  It is probably good practice to do so, less.  But, honestly, I understand it isn't about me!

Great call and we can all practice utilizing "I" less, Michael!  It truly is all about them and I do believe that we all DO know that...we simply need to be able to show them that we know that! 😀

You can tell when people post and it is "all about them"....and they are the least aware of it because it is their usual demeanor.

I had to give this a lot of thought but I decided to come back and comment again. I think the only thing I use the letter I for is to I promise and I thank you and of course I Ponder, Michael Jacobs

Michael Jacobs - What a great blog post and quote too! Yes! I have been told to stay away from the letter "i." It's only one letter but when reading and overused, it just becomes a great big ego! I've also been told never start a sentence with "It," but on occasion (more than an occasion), I can't resist and I do it anyway.

It looks like you're having a great day!

Hi Michael:

I always enjoy your pondering, and this post is particularly good, on a topic we probably all need to keep in mind - "I" certainly do - about not being "I" focused in our communications, email, etc. Seems you and Marte Cliff are of similar opinions on the subject!

Jeff

It can be difficult to elminate the "I" in communication, but perhaps when we set our intention before speaking,  the "I" becomes a vessel to explain the importance of YOU.  Oh boy, did that make any sense? Pondering, pondering, away we go!

Being a big believer in this, it's important to shift the conversation to your client, your friend, your whatever. Easy to do. Start asking THEM open-ended questions! Get to know their story. You already know yours. You can't learn by talking, only by listening.

Joan Cox - thank you and yes, I was gone for a few days and just returned this morning.  I was on an abbreviated commenting routine and no posts published because I was using just my phone.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - it definitely isn't easy.  Jeff Dowler, CRS - it definitely makes sense to me.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - an intentional mind set and intentional speaking can go quite far in improving all aspects of "I".
