Update: Not Dancing Quite Yet

"The greatest wealth is health."

Since I've been (mostly) missing in action for the last two weeks, thought it might be time for a little update on my "situation".   As many of you know, I've been suffering from some severe back pain this month.

Back pain isn't new to me. It's been a chronic problem since first breaking my back in 2007.  At that time, I had Vertebroplasty surgery to repair a compression fracture. Huge success and I was up and around the next day. I was golfing the next week.  I have since had two additional fractures which did not lend themselves to surgical repair.  It was a long time to recover in both those cases.

When I woke up two weeks ago yesterday with excruciating back pain it felt very much like my previous fractures. I feared the worst.  I was able to get into the walk-in clinic for some initial Xrays which didn't indicate any fractures. The Dr thought it was muscle spasms so he sent me home with some muscle relaxants thinking that would help. It didn't... not even a little bit!

Finally, on Thursday I was able to get into my primary care physician to discuss options for my situation.  He confirmed the original diagnosis of no fractures but felt it was severe inflammation throughout my entire back, sides, and hips.  Given the options, we felt some relatively strong pain meds and patience was the most prudent thing to do for now.

Although, the meds aren't as effective as I had hoped they have taken the edge off the pain and I do feel much better today.  I know I'm better because I was able to get out of bed this morning without escruciating pain AND I'm thinking about food again.  I lost 5 pounds over the last 10 days because I had no interest in eating... and really no ability to stand long enough to prepare anything. I certainly didn't mind losing the weight but that's not a good way to do it.  Plus, it didn't even come off where I wanted it to!

So, what does all of this mean?  Well, the good news is I can get around and even sit at the computer and type.  Who knew it takes back muscles to hold your hands and arms up to type?  I discovered it takes back muscles to do just about anything.

The bad news is golf is off the table for the rest of this golf season.  There will be no defending my 3-peat Club Championship title.

I'm not quite dancing yet but, considering all things, life is good.  Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.

Hi Carol, I hope today finds you one step closer to comfort. And, your plan to golf in Arizona this winter sounds like a good goal.

I am glad to hear that you are on the road to recovery!  Do you plan to play golf in the future?  I would think that golf puts way too much of a strain on your back, even when it is healthy.

Thanks for the update, Carol. You've been in my thoughts since I first heard about your pain. As you know, I've been nursing my husband since July 2nd after major spine surgery so back issues are very much on my mind. I have some chronic back problems since being struck by an SUV 13 years ago and learned a long time ago that keeping my back and stomach muscles strong goes a long way to keeping the back pain away.

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD
After what I've been through, I have no inclination to rush my return.  It's good to have goals, though, right?

Hi Nina Hollander
I hear ya.  I remember you saying that and have thought often about how careful you must be in caring for your husband.  The back is such an important factor in almost everything we do.   How IS your husband doing with recovery from his back surgery?

Carol. I hope you’re back at golf soon. There’s nothing worse that having a problem with any body part. I’ve had knee issues for years. Recently, I took a gamble and bought CBD oil. I was a huge skeptic, but three days into taking it, my knee didn’t hurt. That was the first time in years. It’s still pain free 60 days later. The one I take is THC Free.

Still thinking of you, Carol and keeping you in my prayers. Back issues are no easy road - ever - but, you've had a tough road with yours, for sure. Two weeks and givng up your 3-peat, has to be a tough challenge to mentally overcome, never mind the physical challenge.

Steroid packs typically help me more than anything; then I follow with Mobix (sp?).

Not a bad idea to try the CBD oil though - I have a friend who is anti-everything-that's-not-natural (LOL) and she wouldn't take a thing; she preferred to 'work through the pain,' which is admirable but, back pain isn't like a headache! Anyway, she tried this and it worked a miracle for her.

Hey, whatever helps, right?!!

Sending you big hugs and lots and lots of positive vibes, my friend!

Hey Debe Maxwell, CRS
I'm open to the idea of anything that might help.  I'm doing ok but not even the slightest bit tempted to get back in action yet.

BTW: What I'm going through is nothing compared to what you and Ray have been and are dealing with!  It's just very painful and messing with my social life.  Not life threatening.

Sending you lots of healing thoughts for Rays ongoing recovery!

I feel for you as I am going in for back surgery in November. It has caused several quality of life issues for me over the last 7 years and I have committed to take care of it. Say a little prayer for me Carol Williams please!

I had to quit playing golf last year because I was in too much pain....

I don't handle pain of any degree well so I'm impressed you are up and about and have such a great attitude. Back pain can be tricky...my mom has had back issues for years and it's so sad to see her in such pain.
