Since I've been (mostly) missing in action for the last two weeks, thought it might be time for a little update on my "situation". As many of you know, I've been suffering from some severe back pain this month.
Back pain isn't new to me. It's been a chronic problem since first breaking my back in 2007. At that time, I had Vertebroplasty surgery to repair a compression fracture. Huge success and I was up and around the next day. I was golfing the next week. I have since had two additional fractures which did not lend themselves to surgical repair. It was a long time to recover in both those cases.
When I woke up two weeks ago yesterday with excruciating back pain it felt very much like my previous fractures. I feared the worst. I was able to get into the walk-in clinic for some initial Xrays which didn't indicate any fractures. The Dr thought it was muscle spasms so he sent me home with some muscle relaxants thinking that would help. It didn't... not even a little bit!
Finally, on Thursday I was able to get into my primary care physician to discuss options for my situation. He confirmed the original diagnosis of no fractures but felt it was severe inflammation throughout my entire back, sides, and hips. Given the options, we felt some relatively strong pain meds and patience was the most prudent thing to do for now.
Although, the meds aren't as effective as I had hoped they have taken the edge off the pain and I do feel much better today. I know I'm better because I was able to get out of bed this morning without escruciating pain AND I'm thinking about food again. I lost 5 pounds over the last 10 days because I had no interest in eating... and really no ability to stand long enough to prepare anything. I certainly didn't mind losing the weight but that's not a good way to do it. Plus, it didn't even come off where I wanted it to!
So, what does all of this mean? Well, the good news is I can get around and even sit at the computer and type. Who knew it takes back muscles to hold your hands and arms up to type? I discovered it takes back muscles to do just about anything.
The bad news is golf is off the table for the rest of this golf season. There will be no defending my 3-peat Club Championship title.
I'm not quite dancing yet but, considering all things, life is good. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.
