This Week...School Days!

Hard to believe but school has either already started or will be starting in the next few weeks.

Education is not just about going to school and getting a degree. It's about widening your knowledge and absorbing the truth about life. Shakuntala Devi

The first year I was in my community in Leesburg, VA, my neighbor down the street invited me to her annual First Day of School brunch. Mothers and non-mothers were invited to kick back with mimosas and whatever else you serve for brunch.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela

The look of joy and freedom was clearly evident in all of the mothers’ faces.

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Benjamin Franklin

These days school is so much more than reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic. There are after school sports, community service hours, karate lessons, tennis lessons, golf lessons, dance lessons, gymnastics, music lessons...you get my drift.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I think all of the above helps to build a well-rounded person but sometimes I’d love to see a little more emphasis placed on just making sure that our children leave our school system knowing how to read and be good citizens of the world.

Good morning Kathy. Suburbs back in session but the city kids in Chicago don't go back until after Labor Day. Enjoy your day!

Good morning, Kathy Streib there are days when I miss teaching.... but not the rules that are in favor of the students today.... I'd be in handcuffs with the disrespect I hear about...

I like your final sentence, Kathy. So true, we need to emphasis the importance of being a good citizen of the world. My oldest son, and wife, take their young boys on many adventurous trips - Portugal, Spain, Hawaii, and soon France and Italy.   He says it helps them feel a part of something much bigger - and realize their connection to humanity.  I agree. Sadly, not many families have the ability to do this...

On another note, It's hard to believe some of the kids are already back in school. Summer seemed to fly by this year. D

Good morning, Kathy... education was #1 in my house growing up. To this day, I remember my mother always saying "first, get your education; then go do whatever you want to do."

I am sure that it is a big relief for parents when school begins, kids can surely be a lot to handle.  I have learned that with my niece and nephews.

Kathy,

What Martin Luther King said is exactly what so many are lacking in their education, one to think intensively and to think critically.

I see the moms I know gearing up for back to school in our area.  They anxiously await that big  yellow school bus coming down the street and whisking away the kids.

Morning Kathy.

At that time in my life, I just wanted to get it over with.  Looking back, that was not the right decision, sigh

I worked at a software company for several years, and one thing I learned was how valuable education is.  For example, we had young people who had come out of war torn areas like Bosnia.  One girl in particular was 20.  She landed here in the U.S. both her parents had been killed during the fighting in her home country.  She came to work at our company because she could program computers.  In a few years, she married another well educated refugee from the same part of the globe.  Together, they made a life for themselves, started a family, and were quite successful.  I sold them a wonderful home in an upscale part of the Greater Sacramento region.  NONE of that would have been possible without the education they had.  What I learned is that even if every monetary, material thing is taken from you.  Even if your family is destroyed.  If you have an education, you can dust yourself off, and begin anew!

I asked Jack and Thomas when they go back to school and they both cringed. Tom said "Neena, don't say the "S" word!"

Oh, I love this - it brings back so many memories, Kathy.

One that I thought you'd enjoy - about those Mimosas...really, it was about the Mimosas and we MAY or may not remember to bring a brunch item! As long as we had plenty of OJ and champagne, that's all that mattered! LOL

Hi Kathy - there's a very important message in this post and I don't need another mimosa to find it.  Although, if one found its way into my hand...well...I digress...
