Jerome Lester Horwitz was born in Brooklyn, New York back in 1903. While in school he was a mediocre student but excelled in sports, especially in basketball. He dropped out in high school working odd jobs. He was an accomplished ballroom dancer and singer where he performed at the Triangle Ballroom in Brooklyn.
While cleaning his gun at 12 he accidently shot himself in the leg which made it noticeably smaller than the other one. He started performing with his two brothers in vaudeville acts. As they say the rest is history. He became the most famous of the act, which is two brothers encouraged him to continue. By 1944, his health and energy began to wane, which forced him to slow down. In 1946, he had a stroke and another one in 1948 that ended his career. In 1952, he died, he was 48.
While you may not know Jerome (for us older folks) you surely remember his stage name of Curley Howard of the Three Stooges. Yep his brothers were Moe and Shemp.
