The Pregnant Pause

The Pregnant Pause

The Pregnant Pause It's likely we each have experienced such an occasion.  As a participant or as an observer.

When is the baby due?

You can almost hear the words come screeching to a stop as they are spoken.   Before any punctuation mark.  Embarrassing moments happen.  Awkward.   To say the least.  As we know from experience:  silence is golden.  So many quotes come to mind.

We understand but are such faux pas avoidable?  Do you have any suggestions?  Curious...not speaking from any recent personal experience. And this does not need to do necessarily with the pregnancy issue.  Suppositions of all kinds are "fair game".

Good morning Michael. Taking your mind out of park before putting your mouth in drive does not always happen. Enjoy your day!

Hi Michael Jacobs - I gathered from your post that a pregnant pause led to thinking... I do not know what to say next!  It's OK. I have found that salespeople always seem to know how to keep a conversation from stalling.

As for the other... past moms seem to be able to tell when one is pregnant but it is a subject I will not breach unless invited!

Michael,

We had the cutest lady who delivered our mail.  On ocasion I would be outside and would chat with her.  One time, I did ask, "when is your baby due?'  It was very embarassing as no baby was expected.  I apologized for my foot in the mouth moment, she laughed!  She was good natured, and mentioned she was starting to eat less...  Now I do not ask unless someone talks about it!  A

Scott Godzyk - in a business situation, I can imagine the horror that might occur.

Hi Michael!

I was out to lunch with a good friend a couple of years ago. We ran into another one of our friend's daughters who had recently lost her baby (almost went to term). I stood up to hug the younger woman (much like a daughter to me). I had been sworn to secrecy about the loss of her baby until all of their very large Italian family was notified. Before I could change the conversation, my friend asked her how much longer before her due date.

That was not only uncomfortable for her but, for all 3 of us. I learned at that moment that I will never discuss someone's pregnancy unless THEY bring it up...NEVER!

In general, I've learned it's best to remain quiet rather than to "step in it", Michael Jacobs ... and yes, learned from experience ...
