What does STOP really mean?

The other day Gary and I were leaving our home and going through the neighborhood (which has a lot of twist and turns). Just as we were going up a little hill a HUGE garbage truck was coming down the hill. I said to Gary - well that guy is bigger than your truck so be careful, jokingly.

By then we were within a seconds of  passing the stop sign (above). Within a blink of an eye a younger gal went through the stop sign on a small motor bike and took a right turn on Pershing - within seconds of the huge truck coming down the hill. She didn't do a 'rolling' stop or even look to see if anyone was coming down the hill. She flew around the corner. I could see the panic on the garbage man's face as we were right there - OMG I'm going to hit her.  He was within 12 feet of her heading directly towards her - straight on. He slammed on his brakes and missed her by a second, maybe three. Had he hit her it would have been all over for her. Can you imagine how the truck driver would have felt if that had happened.

What did the gal do?  She didn't even notice anything had happened! She just kept going,  turning around another corner with no stopping or looking. I have no idea where she lives as I've never seen her around the neighborhood. If I did I would have made a point to stop by and talk with her and her parents and explain to them what we witnessed in hopes she would change her ways in the future, while she still has one. Very serious stuff, especially with teens who think they are invincible.

This young gal could have died. That's what a stop sign means. STOP.

Please remind your loved ones to -   PLEASE - JUST STOP. You may save a life.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat whatever realm this gal was in as well as so many other teens and adults.....there's a lot of them these days. Teens especially don't think anything can hurt them....

Hi Sharon Lee yes lack of respect for simple laws like stopping at a stop sign to save your own life and that of others.  Not so tough to do, is it. But it goes on...

Nina Hollander it was within seconds of ending up very badly for that girl, the driver, us and the neighbors directly in front of where it would have gone down. And this is a quiet, sleepy neighborhood. I expect it on major roads and freeways as people drive like maniacs.  But not in a quiet neighborhood. But as you said, many people think the stop or yield sign don't apply to them. Especially teens.

Hi Scott Godzyk yes we have plenty of distracted drivers. This gal was on a moped, not on phone. Just not stopping, at all at a stop sign. She didn't even know a big garbage truck almost hit, and would have within seconds had the driver not made a heroic effort to stop abruptly.

Anna this young lady was very fortunate this time, but if she keeps on doing this she will be in a section of the news paper no one wants to see their name in.

AB, It seems red lights and stop signs have just become suggestions to many.  You just can't trust anyone to follow the rules of the road.

So glad nothing happened to Gary and you or the girl.  It is a shame you don't know who she is. Defensive driving skills help keep us alive.

A similar situation in our neighborhood also involving garbage pick up. Young kid 8-9 years old on a mini motorcycle (gas powered) and illegal on our city streets. Ran stop sign going around the corner and near collision. Kid laughing and still going. My husband knew where he lived. The truck driver threw it in park and had to sit on the curb. Driver was having chest pains and shaking uncontrollably. Had to call paramedics. Police came and husband started to take them to the house but the kid came back to see what all the commotion was about. They confiscated the bike and cited the parents. Driver said he'd be ok but was done for the day and it was his last day on the job. He was retiring as planned.  The driver could've squished that kid like a bug.  That kid cursed those police officers like a drunken sailor following in his parents shoes.  They tried to fight the ticket but we were called as witnesses. Husband produced our security video! Nuff said!!

We've had similar close calls when driving - a couple of times people have come out of side roads when we were on the highway and we'd have had a collision had we not seen them coming in time to slow way down and stay out of the way. Both times the other driver came out onto the highway without even slowing at the stop sign - I had the feeling that they didn't even know how close they'd come. Strange - because once was at night. They didn't see headlights coming?

Hi Liz and Bill Spear Bliz agreed. I do not trust that anybody will actually stop at a stop sign anymore.  There are far too many accidents here in PHX and I suppose everywhere else as well.

Hi Sheri Sperry - MCNE® we would have been just fine (physically) and of course had she got hit it would have been a very hard scene. I haven't seen her around but if I do.....

Hi Theresa Akin that's a terrible story. I't hard to imagine parent's allowing that kind of behavior from a kid but it happens. That poor truck driver.....thank goodness he was able to stop and he's ok. Bless his heart.

Hi Marte Cliff driving on country roads can be so much worse. One has to be super vigliant on those lonely roads.  At night, my only guess is maybe alchol was involved? How does on not see a head light?

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 Both of those times we were on State highways, but have had people come out of side roads out here in the country too. Out here where there's not much traffic I think they forget that someone else might be on the road.

I did wonder if the one at night had been drinking. They were going way too fast when they got to the highway and barely made the 90 degree turn to stay on the road.

I've noticed a lot of crazy drivers out there lately - everyone seems to be in a rush to get somewhere and are throwing caution to the wind here too, Anna.

The girl doesn't realize that she would have been dead, the truck driver NEVER would have been the same, even if it wasn't his fault and other witnesses like you and Gary would have been impacted as well.

It's not just missing a sign or speeding, it's ruining others' lives too!

Happy Friday, Anna!

In my other life before real estate, I used to be the Director of Operations for a large trucking company. I had only one fatality in five years and that was caused by someone failing to stop in an intersection and our truck hit the car, killing the driver. I still remember having to console the driver as I took him for a mandatory blood alcohol test. He was sober Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886

I'm sure that was unsettling to witness.  It's so sad how irreverent young people can be at times when they are in such dangerous situations. Being on the road requires such careful concentration - and sadly, young drivers often have their head in the clouds thinking about other things. I'm grateful the driver of the truck was able to stop.

That's pretty darn scary, Anna. I see people running through stop signs, or barely slowing, and at red lights often and have witnessed some pretty close calls. They clearly are not paying attention or are on their phones talking or texting.

Sounds like this young woman is really tempting fate. Hopefully she won't lose!
