Happy 8th Birthday...Baby Gators

 

Eight years ago today, Larry and I were thrilled, overjoyed, and extremely lucky to be able to see the hatching of about 24 baby gators. 

 

We had been watching and waiting for this event for months...from the time Mama Gator slowly began to build her nest up through the time when she guarded it against would-be raiders.

Back on August 23, 2011, we could not believe our good fortune. Thankfully, we’d brought an extra battery for our camera. We stood there along with many others for over 2 hours as Mama Gator climbed up the nest and tried to help with any eggs and babies that were still struggling to get out. 

 

She looked so tired, that at that moment she wasn't the big old alligator that many of us fear but a mother who'd had 24 babies she was now caring for.

 

 

 

As Roy Kelley says...always have your camera at hand, and we are so grateful we did just that.

Wow, Kathy. That must have been amazing to watch.  As tired as she was, she sure can lunge fast when here babies were threatened.  Thanks for sharing!

Brian England Keeping our eyes open for gator and bird nests while we were on our walks was always a lot of fun. 

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I've seen a gator jump going after a dragonfly once. Definitely scared me!

Hannah Williams what's even scarier is to see a gator up on all fours walking. Very prehistoric.
