About School Daze
About School Daze First of all, it isn't actually a daze which is defined as a bewilderment of sorts so it must be another case of some pondering.
As the school year begins in many parts of the country it seems appropriate(to me) that my mind wonders and wanders about school. I remember those early days of returning to school. It seemed to start in September and typically near Labor Day each year. California was admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850(how's that for remembering some state history?) so that meant a day off from school right at the beginning...how lucky, right?
Starting school is filled with memories of many kinds. I remember many, many years ago as I was starting kindergarten. My birthday was close to the start of the new school year and while others may have been thrilled at the prospect of the extra attention. I was not enthused. Not at all. I received a paper king's crown to wear. The embarrassment wasn't overwhelming but not to my liking. However, being the good kid I wore that paper crown home...running from the bus down the street and up the driveway. I learned a valuable lesson that day in school as it became apparent: keep quiet about letting out that news in the open.
In later days, I learned of a girl in the same grade who had the same birth date. Oh, I wonder what ever happened to Vickie Quackenbush. I digress... School brings back all sorts of memories.
Today, I saw young children with parents being walked to school. Some older ones in groups with their friends. Still others being dropped off as the sea of sport utility vehicles, electric and hybrid cars approached the curb of the school entrance. Yes, it is back to school and being mindful and aware of safety should be even more evident. Thoughts of new clothes, remembering class schedules and managing book packs... Many memories.
