Pondering School Daze

About School Daze  First of all, it isn't actually a daze which is defined as a bewilderment of sorts so it must be another case of some pondering.

As the school year begins in many parts of the country it seems appropriate(to me) that my mind wonders and wanders about school.  I remember those early days of returning to school.  It seemed to start in September and typically near Labor Day each year.  California was admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850(how's that for remembering some state history?) so that meant a day off from school right at the beginning...how lucky, right?

Starting school is filled with memories of many kinds.  I remember many, many years ago as I was starting kindergarten.  My birthday was close to the start of the new school year and while others may have been thrilled at the prospect of the extra attention.  I was not enthused. Not at all.  I received a paper king's crown to wear.  The embarrassment wasn't overwhelming but not to my liking.  However, being the good kid I wore that paper crown home...running from the bus down the street and up the driveway.  I learned a valuable lesson that day in school as it became apparent:  keep quiet about letting out that news in the open.

In later days, I learned of a girl in the same grade who had the same birth date.  Oh, I wonder what ever happened to Vickie Quackenbush.  I digress...  School brings back all sorts of memories.

Today, I saw young children with parents being walked to school.  Some older ones in groups with their friends.  Still others being dropped off as the sea of sport utility vehicles, electric and hybrid cars approached the curb of the school entrance.  Yes, it is back to school and being mindful and aware of safety should be even more evident.  Thoughts of new clothes, remembering class schedules and managing book packs...  Many memories.

I dropped by my son's home prior to heading to my office today.  Ironically, my grand-daughter looked as though she was somewhat in a "daze" as she readied herself for the bus.  School starts earlier and earlier in the month these days ... and earlier and earlier in the day too.  Yaaawwwnnnn ...

Back-to-school is a daze for many parents and children alike. It's so hard to go from summer days to school obligations in the course of a day. Too bad kids can't transition into it easier. Ha.

My birth date is September 21st.  Maybe we wore our paper crowns home in the same month.

Oh the NEW clothes...loved the new school clothes!

I don't remember much about going back to school, except I remember vividly sitting in the cafeteria waiting with my mom for first day of first grade. The reason I remember it so well is because I met a little girl that day who had drank Drano when she was a baby and her mouth and cheeks were tragically deformed. Dorothy was in many of my classes throughout the years.

Oh, that does bring back wonderful memories, Michael! You know, our birthdays are nearly the same time and what is funny, I don't remember my birthday ever having been made a big deal. My mother never threw me a birthday party - maybe that's why - no one knew! LOL

I was excited to see my friends again and have new school supplies but, I did miss spending the summer days at the local pool.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I do remember some birthday parties when I was younger.  Maybe that is where my dislike for them grew.    I typically went to Summer School which was probably more for my Mom's sake than for my betterment(lol) as I took classes in art and such.  Not particularly academic but certainly part of a well-rounded education.

Oh, that's fun - those arts & drama classes were always favorites and I think I would have done summer school to get to take more of those, Michael!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I believe that a well-rounded education seems to be missing as part of the curriculum at many schools these days.  Of course, I am looking at them as an observer not as a participant, a parent or educator.

Agreed, Michael - it's all about getting into a top-ranked college these days. Sadly, our children miss out on some of the best years of their lives as a result. And, like you, mine is also merely an observation!
