ok so here is what happened about 9 days ago I planted corn....I planted 6 corn seeds=6 corn stalks...I figured even if the the ol corn didn't come out I could use the stalks to make a really scary scare crow for the farm I plan to buy next year....soooo I went out to fulfill my daily part of the my diet by taking a quick roadtrip to Baskin Robbins last night and was appalled.....FIVE OF MY BABY CORN PLANTS OUT OF 6 HAD BEEN TOPPLED RIGHT WHERE THE STEMS MEET THE SOIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now upon further anlysis there was what appeared to be some sort of Daddy long leg type of spider sitting next to the remaining 6th corn stalk and I am telling you he looked like he was up to no good...but why the ehck would a spider chop down my corn?
THE CORN WAS ONLY 2 INCHES TALL...they grow fast ----up to 6 to 7 feet tall in 2 months...so I wasn't upset which was strange..I guess I was more perplexed!!!!
I was wondering all night? PReying Mantis? Vandalism..but why leave the 6th stalk...and this monring the 6th one was still standing....this morning during my 5 am stroll(yea right,,,more like my 5 am shift to the other side of the bed)...uhmm during my 7 am triatholan to the end of my driveway to get my newspaper I came back to the front porch and realized I just might be able to make it to the Olympics and prodded into my soil and saw on one corn stalk the roots are still in the soil...
Is this unbelievable....I have just lost about 80% of my corn business in ONE DAY....I went out about 2 to get the mail and my stalks were fine.
It could have been anbything...beetles,, chipmunk, a putty cat..there is one that hides by the front porch but the cats would EAT the leaves and these had there leaves intact...it was like something had gone to work right at the base...and no roots were pulled out....
I am seriously thinking of calling Agent Moulder and agent Scully...they seem to know alot about corn fields!
Does anyone have a clue as to what happened? I was hoping to have corn on the cob by August...I am replanting today....
the moral of this story is to show how unexpected things can hit at the most unexpected moment of your business...and how in each business risk mitigation can lead to better success in achieiving your goal. In my case I only planted 6 stalks but should have planted more ..perhaps when I walked out wa the point that scared the critter! Also what are you doing to protect oyur business form damage(if services it could be sabatoge, competition, tortuous interference of your business proceedings).
I hope this blog wasn't to corny!!!!
