Security Bank Searcy AR bag old money holder

Old money bag

Too bad you can't feel the age of this money bag.  It is stiff and inflexible and a bit dirty but the zipper still works.  The small print at the bottom says Member Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

The pictures on this bag show the bank, I think, when it was remodeled somewhere in the 50's or 60's or 70's.  My history expert, Anita Hart Fuller, tells me that the bank was originally named The People's Bank.  The employees at the bank had a contest to see who could rename it.  Her mother, Corinne Hart, won the contest with the name Security Bank.  Here is her picture. She is the one with black hair and she lived to be 100!  We have done several blogs about her.  Later on the bank became First Security Bank.....and still is.

Searcy Sleuths will now need to help further.  I think that the bank covered this beautiful entry and made the entry on the side street and made the bank look modern. (As shown on the money bag.) In the past few years they tried to restore the original look.  Correct me if I am wrong, Sleuths!

We restored the bank in 2009. The human resources and marketing departments are in the original bank. We were never The People's Bank. We were chartered in 1932 at Security Bank. Love the bag! Wish it didn't have the marker spot on it.

The bank image on the right side of the bag is on the corner of Arch and Spring. First Security operated there until the mid 1970's, I believe. First Security then built a new bank on the corner of Spring and Race. The old bank became the KWCK/KSER radio station at that time. Not sure about the image on the left side of the bag.

Kristi, what is a marker spot??  Was there a People's Bank back there somewhere?  I am glad the bank was restored because I like the old look better, don't you?

Former Searcian, I can remember a lot of this but don't remember dates.  I do remember the radio station.  Did they do the "modern look" that is on the bag?

Morning Barbara.

The stories that bank bag could tell.  I remember those, now I'm giving my age away

OOPS!  Don't say that, James.  You can't will by telling your age.  They will either think that you were older than that or say they will say they didn't know you were THAT old.

If you have a copy of the 1979 Searcy High yearbook, look on page 229 for a photo of the KWCK/KSER radio building (old First Security Bank) in the background.

former Searcian, I do have that yearbook and I looked on page 229 and there it is!  I found lots of other good things to blog in that book also!  Are you in it?  I was teaching at Searcy High that year, my first year there.

According to Muncey's book, page 427,  the Security Bank building on the corner of Spring and Arch Streets underwent a face-lifting in 1962. the first floor was completely rebuilt and a new vault installed. A new employee and community room was constructed on the second floor, in addition to a directors room and office space. The plan, according to bank president, E.O. Yancey, was to expand soon directly north where the Ben Franklin Store was then located. However, those plans werealtered within the following eight years and the bank moved to the corner of Spring and Race Streets.

Something of interest about the other bank, The Searcy Bank, is Paula's bank book.

I believe the imformation about the bank being The People's Bank is true. I believe I have some reference to it prehaps in the Centennial article in the Searcy Citizen. I will look for it.

Don, that is a pretty bank book of Paula's.  Thanks for sharing.  The question of whether it was People's Bank is up for arguments, I guess.  I trust the Sleuths to get it correct!  Thanks also for sharing some more blogs!  I think I will check them out right now.  After over 1700 blogs it is hard to remember all of them.

All right!!!  Don's research proves that the bank was People's Bank.  Go to this blog and see wonderful pictures of the bank with the name written on the card that was bought on ebay and shared with us.  Click here.
