What Real Estate Agents Can Learn From a Chicken Sandwich

This past week a war raged on between two corporate behomths specializing in deep fried poultry embraced by two pieces of bread. Granted, Popeyes vs. Chick Fil A is a topic more for the younger generation to argue over, there is much to be learned from this battle.

First...you should know why Popeyes quickly became extremely profittable:

The (Abridged) History of Popeyes vs Chick Fil A:

It all started with a tweet, Popeyes announced their new sandwich. Chick Fil A's account responded in a cheeky manner about their sandwich being a classic, implying Popeyes was a copycat. Popeyes responded with two words: "Y'all good?" - and their popularity exploded with hour long lines, memes, news articles, and being sold out at every chain across the nation.

Here is What You Can Learn from This:

1. Know Your Audience

Popeyes is directly in tune with their audience, and understands their demographic. They spoke in a way that their target market would speak. So instead of being a company selling to a community, they were part of it. Keep this in mind when you are posting to social media. Are you just publishing posts about "Just Listed" and "Open House" listings? Or are you bringing up topics that your community cares about too?

2. Stand Out

When it comes to brands, snarky commentary is typically looked down upon in social media replies (within their marketing department). This is why KFC and McDonalds, who also sell chicken sandwiches, were not even part of the conversation. This was strictly between two companies, and two companies alone. To stand out you should be willing to do things other agents won't. Door knocking and cold calling are examples of what many agents these days seem to avoid, but the agents that do either seem to swear by it.

3. Don't Overload Yourself

Unfortunately, with the story of Popeyes - their popularity was so massive that they could not handle the workload. For one week straight, they were overworked with a high demand for their chicken sandwich. They eventually stopped offering it as of Tuesday this week. How could this have been solved? Higher production of sandwiches? Hiring more workers? Raising the price of the sandwich? In the same token, you don't want to generate more business than you can handle. At which point, you should hire an assistant, start a team, or leverage automation to help cope with your workflow.
