Our Local Carlsbad Owl

Owl in Carlsbad

The owls have been pretty active recently, and one has been hanging out in a dead tree in the canyon behind our house since yesterday morning. We can see it pretty clearly although it's a couple of hundred feet away.

Two of the grandkids are visiting so it's been fun for them to see. And we hear it quite clearly at night and in the early morning.

The crows are not at all happy that it's there and seem to delight in dive-bombing the tree in the evening during their crow show. The owl is not fazed.

It keeps moving around in the tree and hopefully it's OK - it's odd to see one during the daytime

Jeff,

What a great shot.  We used to see owls in the daytime in Napa, paticularly two white ones that would sit on the pillars of the gate.  They looked good there. A

That would have been great fun! Haven't seen any white owls here, just the Great Horned owls. Supposedly there are Barn Owls and Screech Owls around but I haven't seen or heard them in the wild.

Agreed Michael Jacobs  They are interesting birds, perhaps more so because of their habits and being a bit elusive.

I had no idea. We heard them quite a bit when we lived in MA but can't say I recall ever seeing one.

Morning Jeff.

We have one about a block away, it's habitat is being destroyed as they are building new homes in his hunting area.  Pity

That is a really good looking owl.  I like the look of owls and I don't see them very often at my house.

Jeff Dowler, CRS - Your title drew me in. I was hoping the word "Owl" wasn't a metaphor and it wasn't! Seeing the local Owl in the tree gave me a reason to give me my first smile of the day! It brought back fond memories of living in the country with my kids before moving to TX. Your grandchildren are lucky to have this experience with you. I hope they know, they have a very wise Grandfather!!!

To my knowledge, it is unusual to see an Owl in the day or night, except when you're at a Zoo. When you mentioned "crows," I thought the Owl was being territorial because there was food there. But then I couldn't just wonder, I looked it up and found some interesting information:

"The most common reason that an owl would be seen during the daytime is when its sleeping, eating and hunting patterns have been disrupted. Seeing an owl during the day is often less about spiritual or ritualistic meanings and more about the surrounding environment. When there is a lot of human influence in a forested area, all of the wildlife in the area will be disrupted, including owls."

As we approach Fall and Winter, I hope you'll report back on what you're observing. Also, what a great science project for kids!!!

I don'tthink a crow can faze an owl. Now you have gotten me to singing the line out an owl in the song, Tammy's in Love.
