1897 – Inventor Thomas Edison patents the Kinetoscope, the first movie projector.
1920 – The first radio news program is broadcast by 8MK in Detroit, Michigan.
1935 – In an attempt to stay out of the growing turmoil in Europe, the United States passes the first of its Neutrality Acts.
1997 – Diana, Princess of Wales, her companion Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul all die in a car crash in Paris while attempting to elude paparazzi.
2006 – Edvard Munch's famous painting The Scream, originally stolen on August 22, 2004, was recovered by Norwegian police in a raid on August 31, 2006.
