Is Semi-Retirement The Missing Piece That Leaves Money On The Table?

Services for Real Estate Pros with RE/MAX Executive Realty 104763

Once a person hits 60, retirement comes into play, and it becomes a constant thought. In the real estate business, I think there are many options available to make life easy and have a steady stream of income.

If an agent is a listing agent, that agent is capable of having a consistent flow of income, until the agent calls it quits! If I had not selected marketing but continued to list property, I would have referred all buyers to young energetic agents who were not focused on listing property.

I’d make sure the listings I secured were priced properly and sold quickly. No marketing would be needed, but I would market after the fact, just to secure more listings.

Listing property is the less strenuous segment of the real estate business. It eventually becomes a referral business. Happy clients referring your future clients to you.  This is a livelihood that could continue until you can’t find you way to the client’s home!!!  Well, maybe a little before that!

Just a thought to share after reading Roy Kelley’s comment on my post about fitting into Cinderella’s Glass Slipper…..

Morning Barbara.

I get two retirement checks, working on the third one.  I have no plans on retirement, at least not in the near future.

Barbara, I too have been more of a listing agent these last few years, and does put lots less mileage on your car.   Think retirement is still down the road, I get bored too easy.

Barbara in this business we have many options, and that includes retirement options like the one you pointed out.  We can retire and still keep our finger in the business.

Back twenty years ago, I was working at a software company and selling a lot of real estate at the same time.  I essentially was burning the candle at both ends.  I dreamed of retirement and time off.  Then in 2005 the software company had a large layoff.  They kind of gave me a golden parachute, and I came home, thinking all was going to be well.  I ended up at the senior center crocheting doilies with even older gals, who I loved and adored.  However, after a couple of months of that, I went absolutely stir crazy.  Real estate by then had began to suffer the early troubling signs of the housing crash.  It was quite the adjustment of mindset.  I wondered where in my eagerness to retire and have more free time, I had gone wrong.  I am getting better at my journey in that direction however.

Hi BarbaraT- I remember Lenn Harley told me that she continued to go to seminars and continuing education classes because it was a good place to network. She would get listings and then refer them to agents she met whom she felt would be good for the client. Just got my bloodwork results today and everything is A-Ok so I'm declaring that 70 (almost) is the new 45!

Hi Barbara Todaro - Retirement is a state of mind! Life is what you make of it.

I retired before 50 and my husband had been planning his retirement way before 50 and he retired at 55.  That is when we came to Sedona full-time. It was part of the plan.

Prior to Sedona, I worked out with a trainer and gardened and we traveled and I volunteered. My husband had 7 weeks of vacation. I never got bored

I remembered the LOOK we would get when my husband said he was retiring. It was as if someone had died. They would say..."What are you going to do?"

Prior to retirement, Rick was working and commuting less than 40 hours a week. He thought he was going to have a TON of spare time to do a ton of projects.  He still wasn't getting everything done he wanted to do. He realized that all he got back was less than 40 hours a week!

When you love what you do it is not work and does not force you into retirement! It is as simple as that.  I love what I do. Rick and I are in our 2nd act and love being grandparents and enjoying real estate. It is something I always wanted to do full-time.

I do re-evaluate every 5 years. I have 3 to go before I re-evaluate. It may just mean a slight course correction. Right now I live in the moment.

Hey Barbara I know a lot of agents that are semi-retired and loving it and income continues to flow in along with other sources. And there are a few that said - I'm done - and actually fully retired. Let me say - they aren't easy to find as they're busy doing all kinds of interesting things.  I had lunch with 2 or them a month or so ago and he says - Guess what the most asked question is in our neighborhool?  Well...... I'm not sure?  He says -   What DAY IS It!!  Every day is Saturday to us-  Loved it!!

Hi Barbara:

Great advice to ponder for the future. I know a number of agents who do quite well with referral business, as others here have mentioned!

I have to say that listing homes and listing appointments was never my passion but investment real estate is. The good news is that the average amount of homes that an investor buys is 5.
