Is This A Good Time To Try Real Estate

A caller after my radio wanted to know

'Is this a good time to try real estate?'

He said he had a license about ten years ago and now, unemployed, he's thinking about getting back into the business.

There were a couple of questions for him.

How did you do back in 2009?

He said he was doing it part-time, but he loved going into houses.

My response:

If you have the passion, the fire in the belly and the drive to learn to work hard...it is always a good time to get into real estate!

Fire in the belly Margaret rome

Do you have some funds saved to live on for the first year?

You probably already know that answer.

My response:

Working another job does not allow you to take classes, go to seminars, learn how to blog, shadow another successful agent, advertise, or be available for taking care of your buyers and sellers.

If you are just 'trying' real estate, it is never a good time!

There is only one person that can make it happen. You!

How would you answer?

Is this a good time to "try" real estate?

I would have answered the same way you did, Margaret. There's no a "little bit pregnant."  And there's no, a " little bit real estate agent." You are fully committed and passionate about it, or not.

Hi Margaret- your answer was a good one. You can't get into real estate as a stop-gap until you find something else.

Kathy Streib But so many do. Look at the huge numbers who take the course and never follow through.

Good mornng, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland it's always a good time to "attack full force" what you need to learn and exercise in the real estate business.... tip toeing doesn't work well in our industry.... you'll be stomped on...

No doubt, no business is available on a trial basis.  You have to assess the entire picture and 'go all the way' in order to make it work. Thanks, Margaret.

Good afternoon Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - this is sage advice for anyone wanting to go into your own business.  You need to be all in--time and investment.

Margaret:

“Trying” real estate sounds like someone who might not be serious and willing to commit to all that needs to be done to succeed. I think your advice and questions were spot on!

I've been a real estate broker now for 10 years and in the business for 13. It was never about "trying", it was always "how can I become more successful." And the more I work at it, the more successfull I have become. And going into it when you are unemployed and not getting regular money in? That will lead to desparation and probably some bad decisions to get a commission. As a broker, I would never "hire" someone in that position.

Most new agents that I see come into the business usually don't last past 18 months if they are just part time.  It has been my observation that new agents who can last 5 years are probably going to make it a career.
